...had a bit of a mishap tonight...

Not the first time, either, so it's time to fix it all the way. I'm pulling the Chinese hubs out and adapting some front hubs from my Geo Metro....BUT! I want to get rid of these crumby ball joints and replace everything with heim fittings...I think. The bushings at the other end of the arms are shot and are not replaceable (they were brass bearings). A ciouple years ago I replaced all the bushings on the driver's side with some I made from hockey pucks and it works great, but the other side is still shot. I'm considering replacing them all with heims, but I don't know if that's the most appropriate solution.

So I guess those are the two points where I need advice:

Should I replace all three joints with heims or just the ones at the hub?

What size should I be looking at? This buggy wet and ready to roll weighs about 1200lbs, but is butt heavy.

It’s a 1200lb buggy...would 5/8” be heavy enough to support the weight and some abuse? That’s really been my biggest concern about it...with ball joints the weight is supported by the arms, but with heims the weight is on the heim stud.

    More than enough.
other than on the trailing arms I had 5/8 everywhere on the old Deztaz race car and my present project has 5/8 in most places.

I have a couple 3/4 that you could use for the lower arms. They’ll hold no problem.

I sent you a pm. The 3/4 would make me feel more comfortable, but if the 5/8 are strong enough to support the weight of the buggy I think that would be the more convenient way to set it up.

I’m going to do 3/4 on the bottom, 5/8 on the top...if I go back and do the frame connections I’ll do 5/8 there, too.

im mostly doing the 3/4 on the bottom just to make myself feel better. I had it pointed out to me last night that it was kind of silly to be that worried about a 5/8” stainless bolt holding up what a 2”x4” 3/16 piece of mild plate has been holding since 2007.
