Hi all you boffins out there. I have been working on building up my tools and equipment for building buggies etc.. I have just tested my tube bender that I mocked up in solid works after seeing something similar on this forum. Please excuse the welding as my machine in the tool room is playing up - soon to be fixed.

I bent my first tube today and was really happy. I think there is some adjustment needed. I am getting a slight flattening of the tube on the outside of the bend and drag marks from the follower. Pics attached.

I think this may be caused by the follower being to far away from the die, approx 2 to 3mm. this, I think, causes the tube to bend in free air and not constrained in the die. I have made the follower adjustable with shims and will pack it up to fits snug tomorrow. The tube fits well in to the bending die and there is next to no slop.

Secondly, the dragging, this will be reduced with oil, but I would like to not have to. This could also cause the tube to flatten?

    A penny for your thoughts.
    Thanks

Quick addition, I am bending 38.1 x 2.6mm DOM tubing - Roll cage certified for NZ Off-road racing. The center line diameter is 200mm.

    Cheers

My thoughts are the pivot die is to far to the left in the top photo.

If the dies are like my Pro tools the pivoting die is much more over toward the right in alignment.

You can fax me the penny!

    Thanks Guys,

Bull: I made the dies on an old student lathe. The slop in the guides is excessive but I was happy with the way it turned out. I will post a few pics and a short video of the machining this evening.

Nutz: I have made the pivot die adjustable. I can move it in or out from center-line. I will move this our tonight and try another bend.

The machine needs a bit of a tidy up, but seems to do its job. Any one know the cheapest place to buy an air over hydraulic ram?
    Cheers

As in Colechester student? Nice machine!

It looks like the follower has some type of inserts in it in the first picture, thats why I asked.

Yeah the lathe is a great machine, but it has been abused and not well maintained. Our maintenance manager is a "fit for purpose" kind of man!!

Have you lubed the tubing? The drag will cause it to stretch and flatten the tube. It does this on our hydraulic JD2 without the lube. Especially on thin walled tubing. We use regular multipurpose grease (or whatever is laying around).

??? I do not see how the die can be adjusted myself? At least not in the way that I am referring as its the HUGE pivot bolt is too far over is my thoughts.
