I always thought bdkw1 would be the first on the board to take the next step. I'm eager to see you put it through it's paces!

If I won the lotto, a DMLS machine would be on the way........

I see these as being very big in the future. They are getting faster and larger but price is still a little (lot) out there.

Dual powder models are on the way, imagine being able to print out a jet engine fan blade with a High strength SS inner hub and titanium blades. All with no welding or machining.

It is going to be a few years before there is one in every shop, but it is coming.

SpaceX is currently printing rocket parts out of Inconel. Konigsegg is printing turbos. It definitely won't be long until 3D printing is standard practice in manufacturing. I can definitely see N1/2 fan assemblies and compressor stages being printed in the very very near future. Those are immensely expensive to manufacture. 3D printing would cut the cost significantly. Of course us end users in the aviation world won't see the cost savings...

Yeah, I work for Trumpf, years ago they were into metal deposition technology then it kind of died off, they just opened a whole new depatment and a team of engineers just for the development of metal "printing".

Don't forget you can also smooth the surfaces down post printing with whatever will dissolve the material you printed with. It helps the FDM parts hold together. I did this with prototype leaf blower tubes I made at an old job. We had 3D machines with ABS, so acetone worked great (just not good for your liver!)

Ketones work well for abs parts as well.

We have a direct metal laser at work. Aluminum parts are pretty cool, and you can make intricate parts that can be post machined to meet tolerances.

We've done alloy steels as well. Apparently GE will be printing the fuel nozzles on their next generation turbofan engines. Going from 19 parts down to 3 really cuts cost.
