Reverse has always been a debatable issue. Installing a FNR box is expensive on some buggy setups, so some builders tend to skip it. My buggy doesn't have it and I really struggled at first, but you tend to learn how to drive and park in ways that avoid reverse. However, my next build is a heavier buggy and I'll need reverse on it.

For a reverse I'm thinking a harbor freight ATV winch for $40. I'll need to mount a belt pulley on it somehow, and mount the whole thing on a hinge so i can add tension when I want to reverse, and un-tension the belt for normal operation. The winch goes both ways so would make a good granny gear.

I really wish I had used an ATV motor.

I would get a winch with free wheel my self and put a sprocket on it.That way you can keep tension on it.Maybe even be able us it on the same chain as the motor.

Have you thought about using a starter motor and a ring gear?

I've thought about a starter motor for reverse. Not sure where to get a suitable ring gear. Starters spin pretty fast so would need quite a bit of gear reduction - I dont think it's feasible. Frankly I'm running out of steam on this project...

I bought new rear springs which were 2in shorter but 110 lbs per in. Had to make perches for them to go on the shocks. I used 2.5in muffler pipe and a 2.5in hole saw to make a ring, and welded the ring to a couple inches of the pipe. It seems to work pretty well but now I need to lower the rear end! I would rather raise the front but that would mean major surgery on the A-arms to change the angle of the heim joints. I think I will just make some temporary offset mounts for the rear shocks to lower it, and if I get a huge burst of motivation later I will make new A-arms.

Oh yeah, I also bought a Chinese radiator fan for about $20. It said it was 80w, but in only pulls about 1.5A from my battery charger, so their math is a little off. But at least it's probably not too much for the alternator. It does move some air! Way more than the little POS Ninja fan. I'm hoping that will keep the kart from overheating. Next step would be a small car radiator.

After the ride height is settled i'll take it out again and see what else needs to be done.
