Spring is here and it’s finally warm enough outside to do some work on my buggy. I’ve started out with some CAD (computer and cardboard) to redesign my rear suspension. My original design was a parallel a arm set up which resulted in no camber change as the suspension cycled. I also needed to re-build the rear uprights to accommodate brake callipers (over looked this when I built the original rear suspension about 5 years ago) so I figured I would re do it all (uprights and control arms).

I am going to stick with the ‘non plunging’ cvs I currently have so I have been paying close attention to keeping the axle plunge close to zero with the new design.

Here is a Solidworks assembly of the new rear suspension. Boxed control arms (not boxed in on the computer model yet) and a new upright.

Cardboard mock up of the rear upright and caliper mount.

Final check of my numbers for my new rear suspension before I start cutting steel. Let me know if anyone has any comments!

    Camber curve (negative values):
    Full bump: 5.1*
    Ride: 1.8*
    Droop: 2.1*

This set up will be the same width as the original suspension, 15” of travel, 4.5” frame clearance at full bump.

Axle plunge according to the CAD is 0.1” overall change from full droop to bump. I am aware this will probably be slightly higher in the rear set up but I can live with about 0.1-0.25” or so.

That looks like nice articulation and camber changes.
    Looks to combat scrub well.

Thank you K-Fab. I think it came out well also.

Wheel scrub is not perfect but will definitely be lower than the original design with parallel arms. Suspension design is full of trade offs/compromises R1 Single Seat Mini Build!

Aren't they all? I don't think there's any that are just "perfect".
I can't imagine what the F1 guys chase. 2" of travel and an absolutely incredible amount of input to control.

I assume “perfect” is most likely not a word used in suspension design! Lol

No doubt. Those guys must go in circles all day long chasing the proper numbers.

Check out the very first forum on the home page - Minibuggy.net Lounge.
    There’s a long running F1 thread there.
    Supercross/Motocross also.

is there a reason for the bend in the lower arm? I am in the mind set that if it has a bend started is will dent to bend there easier than if it was straight, looks really good.
