My friend Mike and I are starting a new project. We got a 2001 Yamaha Raptor 660 Quad to use for the front end and engine. Mike is designing this in Solid Works. We are using a JD2 bender with 1.5" .095" wall welded tube. The rear drive will be a spool type with 70's vintage BMW CV axles and stubs. This time we are going with trailing arms. Those will be our design. We are using off the shelf Rack and pinion box, clutch/brake pedal set and gas pedal. The motor has reverse so that saves time and money. We have property in the family with miles of dirt road, all private forest. It's north of here about 2.5 hours in Mendocino County. The projected "total cost" is about $5500. The build time will be most of a year.

Above is a link to photos of our earlier effort. It shows our redo of the rear drive from U-Joints to CV joints. We got a lathe in between those which was a big improvment in our capabilities. Look forward to comments and questions from you all.

Just an FYI the 2001 raptor 660 were famous for a gearbox issue that caused a $$ failure when it let go. If yours is one of this batch fix it now with the updates. The extra weight of the buggy will make it fail sooner if its one with the faulty gears.

Well I finally figured out how to get some pics to post. Thanks to those who helped me out.
Mike has been flogging his mouse in SW. Here is the current version of the simi trailing arm plan. That is early 70's BMW CV axles and stubs. The spool is 3" sced 80 pipe 8" long with sealed bearings 80x35mm and 1" 15 spline shaft. The trailing arms are 2" and 1" dia. I think we are pushing 14" travel which will bury the sprocket and rotor in the dirt. sprockets are 12/47@ 18.5 inches of travel per engine revolution with 23" tires. 13/47 gets 20". Outsides of tires are 69". The shocks are yet to be nailed down. One of the most expensive components in this project. We took heed of sage advice gleened from the site to work from the outside in when designing from scratch. The front end is coming along nicely. I should have something to show you next week.

It might be me but I see an aweful lot of twisting force on those large "blue" tubes in your suspension. Maybe its just the way I am looking at them. One time I think they seem ok but they nag at me.
