Saw an article last night from Jalopnik about a company that'll be selling a crate electric motor kit for classic cars. Supposedly it fits in classic Mini Coopers and type 1 Bugs. The kit comes with the motor, electronic cooling system, 1 speed "transmission". Pretty much everything but the battery pack, which is usually the bulk of the weight anyway.

Pricing isn't set yet, hopefully it won't be dramatically expensive for DIY'ers, kind of seems that they are catering to that group. Also, they did mention that the system will be weather and more than likely waterproof.

Once I get my gas powered buggy built, maybe the next one I build will be all electric, as long as it isn't cost prohibitive.

I really like electric vehicles. I spent a little time riding a Zero SR and oh my god 140lbs of torque off the line is incredible. The acceleration is ridiculous. I'd like to see more stuff like it. My only problem with them is range, but the more common they become to more common charging stations will become.

Horsepower ratings are garbage with electric motors, though. I want to know how my torque it produces...that's how much works is going to be done.

I've been looking at Zero motorcycles for over a year, hopefully more dense power supplies will come out in the coming years for double the range at the same price. Far as torque goes, long as it's good up to 60mph or so, I wont complain. Yeah electric motor hp ratings should be taken with a grain of salt, I go by amp ratings, since that's generally more reliable to go off of.
