[QUOTE=makenzie71;329243]The electric reverse was available but it's not very robust.
I'm still a little unsure about how to handle reverse. I have a np241 transfer case sitting in my basement. I am wondering if I can use the planetary gear set as a forward neutral reverse box. I'd have to make a new case just for the gear set. I work in a machine shop so it shouldn't be much trouble. The annulus ring was designed to be stationary in that setup though and not the carrier.

Instead of the transfer case you could get a front wheel drive transmission and use it. Adapt the gl1500 shaft to the transmission input and weld the final drive in the transmission...that’d give you reverse and a really, really large variation In gear ratios. Using a generic Honda Civic transmission, first gear in it and first gear in the 1500 plus 4.44 axles would give you lawnmower speeds.
probably not really feasible to do, but I like the idea.

I've considered that as well. It may even be a better route considering there is definitely a concern about packaging. I wanna aim for 90" wheel base, 72" track width, and 10-14" belly clearance. That puts the already tall engine over top the rear diff. Also using a car transmission would remove any concern of the gold wing clutch. Since I'd likely just leave it in one year and just shift with the transmission.

Considering reverse is most often used to back off the trailer, I would just use it. Having an extra transmission is going to add a lot of weight and take up a lot of space. They used Goldwings as tow trucks in some countries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiojZ7HfCWo

I think for what I intend to use the buggy for, reverse is gonna be a must. If I end up using the Suzuki samurai transfer case and a home made planetary gear box for reverse. It should add much weight. The samurai case is only 45lbs. I don't think a reverse box could weigh anymore then that.

I personally use reverse a lot...not just backing off a trailer. Judging by op’s user name and desire for 4x4, I think reverse will be important to him (but that really is conjecture). The car transmission adds some problems, solves others.
will still be using the gold wing clutch, though...which should handle it just fine. The car transmission won’t have a clutch...that’s bolted the the flywheel, which is bolted to the engine.
