    ZX600 runs, but not good.

I have a Kawasaki 99 ZX600 in my rail, it fires up just find, then the revs go up to about 4k for about 1 min, then it starts reving down till it finally quits. Then it won't restart for about 10 min, then does the same thing again. As long as I keep playing with the throttle it'll stay running. I've pulled the carbs apart, found nothing, cleaned them up, checked/set the floats, same thing. It has an aftermarket fuel pump with a regulator set at 1.5 psi, I've bumped that up to 2 psi, and it had fuel coming out of the overflow, so I don't think it's running out of fuel. I bought this rail about a month ago, never had a street bike and know nothing about them. Can't drive it this way, help.

It is revving to 4k on its own? Sounds like it is running lean to me, like an air leak or something.

Is there some sort of choke on the carbs?

Make sure you have all your vacuum lines capped and none of the intake boots have cracks and are clamped tight. If even one of those lil guys is leaking it'll give rev-up problems like you're saying, or pop and argue with you while pumping/twisting the throttle. Also, did you change your air filter recently? Sometimes high-flow filters will cause lean problems.

make sure your gas tank is vented, if sealed tight it will not let fuel into the carbs, pull the gas cap off and try it.

Great advise. It's amazing how often something so simple can derail a vehicle. It's one of the first places I look when I start having a lean issue or an issue that seems to go lean and stay that way for a few. It's one of those "if you've not experience it, you'd never believe it" things.

Fixed, got a list of things: first, the crankcase had 1.5 gals of"oil"(oil and gas), second, the resistor in the wiring harness that fakes out the computer was opening intermittently, third, one of the carb floats wasn't shutting off at all (found out if you don't shut off the gas valve it would siphon gas from the tank, thus the gas/oil issue) After I fixed all of that, it runs great. Thanks for your ideas and help.+
