440 sled engine vs 400 motorcycle engine?

Within the next year ill be building a small buggy, full independent suspension, the works. Anyways, i have a choice between two engines, a kawasaki KZ400 engine, which right now with the work i've done is probably pushing about 40hp, or a Suzuki 440 spirit motor out of a sled, no idea what kind of HP its pushing, but its Fan cooled.

Anyways, right now i'm leaning towards the motorcycle engine because of the gear box. I'd like to hear your opinions on this. Right now both engines are in a machine that kind of works (Kz400 engine is in a go kart, sled engine is in a ghetto sled). So let me know, thanks!

IMO...Old street bike engines are stupid heavy for what they put out. If you are keeping it small and light, I would sell both engines and use the money towards a quad or motocross bike motor to keep the trans.

That's what i would do, my current buggy had an Exciter 440 engine in it, and that had about 55 hp. I got bored of it real quick. I'd say something with atleast 70+ hp, but your gonna want more hp after that anyway. I took my 440 out and put a 570 with 100 hp in it.

Alright, well i'll see if i can sell the engines, i only payed $40 for the bike engine+uni pods and a custom SS exhaust, and the sled engine was free. I'm trying to keep this build on a budget though, so it will all depend. I think if i geared the KZ400 engine for 60 i would be fine, right now its in a yard kart which is like 6ft long haha, anyways its geared for around 90 in 6th and it will roast the tires all the way through 3rd.

Anyone have any idea what the sled engine is rated at HP wise? its a 91' arctic cat jag 440 engine, F/C, its one of those 440 spirit motors by suzuki.

that motor is around 65hp. the actic cats with the spirit motors were very good power plants for the day.I had them & the motors out lasted the sled frames
