I've been thinking about the next tool I want for my shop. It's probably going to be a lathe... something small so I can do bushings. But, I also wouldn't mind having a plasma cutter. This got me to thinking... I wonder what tool all you goobers are looking to purchase soon.

as a side conversation... if you guys have input on desktop lathes or inexpensive plasma cutters, I'm all ears.

    let's hear it...

I'm kinda itching for a mill, but I doubt I'd get my money out of it.

No input on the lathe or plasma cutter.

IMHO, get the biggest lathe you can afford.

You can usually find a used, larger lathe, for around the same price as a new, smaller lathe. If you get lucky, you get tooling with a used lathe too.

A pipe bender and lathe are at the top of my list...right below the garage to put them in.

I'll echo Liduno, get the largest lathe you have room for and can afford. The little ones just lack rigidity making it very hard at time to get a good surface finish. A large lathe can make small parts but a small lathe can't make large parts. I have an 18" swing Reed Prentice myself. I have needed a larger one on more than one occasion.

For plasma, I'd stick to thermodynamics or hypertherm. Yes, they are more expensive on the front end but their consumables seem to last longer, they are nicer to use, and the cut quality is much better.

Next tool I want is a tungsten sharpener for tig welding.

I would love to have a tig welder so I can make pretty welds and weld aluminum.

By the way, I have a south bend 9 inch and I definitely wouldn't go any smaller than that. Buy it used and get a good brand name like southbend, reed, logan, monarch, just to name a few. Also try and find one that comes with some tooling. Chucks and toolposts are pretty expensive to buy new.

Iron worker (Edwards 55 ton), one of the best purchases. Plasma (hypertherm), not so much, just not as convenient as I thought. Mill prolly my next big tool purchase, but never used one and not looking forward to the learning curve.
