Hey guy's, please look at these pics and see what you can come up with.

Basically, I bought this from a guy who was selling it for a neighbor lady who's husband had passed...she needed Christmas money for her kids. The guy said her husband was a big guy and the Oddy was fast with him in it.

I know it's an older model and it has a lot hacking done to it.

    Here is what I know:

It has a 400 to 500cc Polaris sled engine with the Polaris engine pulley but i don't know what the driven pulley is.

I thought it had a Honda rear but after looking at it I don't know what it is! I can't spin the axle by hand with the wheels off, but I can by turning the pulley so it feels like it may have lower gearing.

Has a 5 bolt hub on one side and a 4 on the other.

I have not ridden it yet to see how the gearing feels...it was cold and the motor would fire up but not idle.

Basically I want to know what rearend is in this thing and if it's worth keeping.

I am going to just litter this with pics and hope that somebody recognizes anything.

I am 5'6" for reference although it has a tractor seat in it which will be swapped out.

Starting on the left (diver's side) and I will pan to the right.

The engine seems to be in a cradle but I don't know if that's from the sled or the Oddy.

And the rear has some mount welded to the front of the frame but bolted on the rear.

    Here's the plan:

IF the rear seems worth it, I will keep it and use it to build my IRS...if not then either find a tranny or just go the simple route with pillow blocks, etc.

I like the way the engine is mounted low and would rebuild the whole rear frame / cradle.

I will a-arm the front and am thinking trailing arm in the rear.

I will be riding mostly trails here in western PA and Wellsville, OH.

THANK YOU for any help you can give!

    Welcome Mascman.

First, I think everything you mentioned is being cancelled out by how close your head is to the roll cage.

    Can the seat be lowered?

Ya, you have to get your head inside the cage for sure. Some rear suspension would make it a lot more fun to drive.

The rear end looks a lot like an old golf cart rear end, but that's a guess.

Yes. It is a tractor seat...the kind that the back and armrests fold up and down. It is tall.

That will be replaced for sure...as well as the dirt bike tank and rigged up exhaust.

I want to strip the thing down and reinforce everything and add suspension.

Is there a place to buy ends that I can weld or bolt to the ends of the rear...then use cvs from there.

I am just unsure of the strength of the rearend. I suppose I can use it then redo at a later time.

    Sounds good.

You should pull the seat and sit in it, to make sure you can get low enough?

Sorry, I don't recognize the frame or rear drive unit. If I had to guess, Id say its from a riding low mower. Its definitely a worm and wheel gear box,(this is why you cant over run it from the hub) which means super low gearing!

    Where are you located BTW?

I thought I filled out my profile...just did now. I'm near Pittsburgh, PA.

Good call on the seat...I did notice it had an adjuster on it which I'm sure adds to the height.

The axle is about 1.25"...are worm gears strong? I would think this thing would have some grunt with the lower gears and 2 stroke engine.

I like the motor mounted the way it is and if I make the rear frame section I can get a little more room. Tank should be low at almost the height of the engine.

I would say you could do a lot better starting from scratch.

Worm gears CAN be strong if its a true worm gear though there is another issue. If you stop spinning the input shaft of a worm gear the other part locks up!

If you are hauling tail when this happens and nothing breaks the rear tires will lock up and momentum will make you its B!#@h as if somone jacked the parking break and the rear end goes where it wants too. If this means into a tree or big ditch...... YEEEEhaw! Could hurt a lot too.

Plus if you build around such a rare gearbox and it breaks it could be a lot of work to make something else fit.

Too many better ways to make an omlette here IMO.

More common parts would be my choice easy.
