Long time lurker, first time poster here. My son came to me a few months ago and wanted to "build something cool." I'll not bore you with the details, but now one of the bays of my garage has a buggy cage and a wrecked CBR 600 donor. I thought he'd take a lot longer to pick up welding and fabrication, but he's almost ready to get the motor mounted and he's waiting on me now to help him design a rear suspension and drive.
I've spent far too long scouring the forums, images, and pinterest posts for rear chain drive/suspension ideas, and at the risk of starting ANOTHER thread about cheap DIY drivetrains, I'll cut to the chase. I'd like to use axles and hubs from an S10 front or other FWD car that the local wrecking yard has plenty of. I really like this setup (below) and I recognize a few parts (I think the VW brake is clever). Does anyone know any more detail, or can you suggest how this sprocket was mounted? Is this a protodie, or a homebrew spool?

Here's a similar one on the sprocket side - does anyone recognize that axle BTW? It looks GM, but I don't recognize the coupler on the axle:

I was tempted to jump down theedgeproduct rabbit hole, but wow their parts are spendy. I can't justify spending 3K+ just on a rear suspension setup. Any guidance would be appreciated.

welcome to MBN, or at least coming out of the Lurking closet
neither of those pics are Protodie live axles.
mine are on sale right now though if it helps
Mine at made for 930 cvs
Protodie sale
quick tip before you mount your motor,,,,
some guys center their motor,,,, then realize later when they line up their live axle sprocket to the motor sprocket that they need to either move their motor over or go with 2 different length axles.
most axles come in pairs,, so you would end up buying 2 pair,,, adding to your expense
so it is good to center your live axle choice first, then align your motor sprocket to it and have equal length axles.

Lug-Nuts built his Shredder II buggy using S-10 CV axles. Look at his build thread and spool setup for ideas. The trailing arms for the Shredder II are easy to build and they can probably be adapted to work on your buggy.

Thanks for the responses! Protodie, what sprocket and axles do you recommend for your setup?

sprocket ratios
tire size is a factor with ratios, the bigger the tire the more reduction needed
with 600 cc , we ran around 16-52 with 20" tires racing
24" tires we ran around 14-55 I think
there are some gear calculators on here
if you go to the sticky at the top of the driveline section (where this thread is at)
click on the paperclip attachment on the right aide of the top sticky, "gearing chart for you guys to use"
download the gearing calc attachment
Most of our buggies I set up for 100-120 mph top speed.
not because thats the top speed we want, but it puts the gear shift points where we like them
sprockets are 6 on 5 1/4 bolt pattern
I get my sprockets from speedpartz.com or hyperracing.com
We like 2 piece split sprockets because you can change them without dis-assembling your cv's / axles from the live axle
cv's and axles, We use 930 cvs and axles from empi
Cvs and axles
hope this helps

This has been super enlightening guys - I really appreciate the advice. I'll post up some pictures of the project to see if anything else jumps out to anyone. I have to say that it will probably take me weeks to clean up my kid's first welds. He's actually gotten quite good after a couple months practicing.
@Protodie - 120MPHmaybe for version two.. having a 12 year old at the wheel of a machine capable of doing 120.. well lets just say I can already hear his mother screaming at me.
@MASCMAN - very clever on your setup. Where did you find that keyed coupler (in the picture below)? And the flange that you welded to it, was that made or purchased? Great pictures BTW!!

You can get almost everything you need at
http://www.surpluscenter.com
I ordered that steel plate off ebay...also made my axle hubs the same way. Just have to hold saw the center out and weld the hub on. That is a rear sprocket from a Cannondale quad.
I would suggest for a master cylinder and pedals to look at Polaris Rzr stuff.
