I cut down 1 of the axle stubs off the Roketa LT conversion project so I can convert to U joint setup.
Had a Really hard time cutting the axle stub Material on my buddies lathe because it was so hard! Had to keep sharpening the cutting tool and keep the rotation speed slow.

Im kinda worried now because I think the part is Cast.
When I tacked the Yoke to the axle stub I had to remove it because it was a hair off center from the tack weld, but after I cut the first tack off I was able to pop the opposite side tack right off the stub. The weld stayed onto the yoke and peeled off the stub leaving a pit which looked like cast material.
I ended up resetting the yoke and welding it up all the way around.

Im not sure if its forged cast or regular Cast. it does throw sparks when I sanded it down. But now Im worried about the yoke popping off the stub with the weld. It looks pretty solid and the weld seemed to flow good with no popping back once feeding the bead onto the Stub.

I was trying to not have to rebuild the Trailing arms and utilize what I have but if I blow the yoke off the stub then I will have to rebuild the trailing arms to fit a new Micro stub setup.

Granted the buggy is only running a 35HP v Briggs with FNR. Top speed about 60MPH but lots of torque.
    Heres a pic.
Sorry pic is not very clear. Best I could do with phone camera.

Those welds look good. Cast iron should show a migration line at the edge of the weld where carbon collects making a weak joint. Grinder sparks from cast iron are yellower than carbon steel sparks. Talon is a good source for welding questions.

Dont think the welds will be a problem, but the tube end on the joint looks shallow limiting angle. I ran into this myself on first project. Let me know how this works out for you.

    Thanks for the insight guys.
I took the stub to an Old timer local precision welder. He said it looks good also for the amount of HP that the Buggy will be running. He said it looks like harden cast and to next time heat it up before welding.

PSLwelder, sorry not sure what you meant by Tube end?
