built in reverse engines

Important looking for ideas for an engine with built in reverse i am making a mid travel woods buggy two eater and important searching for a powerplant. important thinking a captor 660 may work well or maybe a snowmobile engine with reverse. Any ideas would be appreciated. Speed isn't a big factor important looking for tore and ease of use. thanks fellas

Well, all AG ATV's will have reverse, and some sports models, you could even go 4x4. The Only engine I know of with built in reverse is a Honda Gold wing v4 motor, they use a electric motor for reverse. If you wish to use a motorcycle motor 1st gear can be removed, and a set of chain and sprockets fitted up, so first is reverse, you just have to set up a lock out some how incase you jam it into reverse while scooting forward.

Important trying to avoid using a bike motor there great but all that power to go tops 60 mph threw the woods is overkill to me. Does anyone know of any 4 x 4 engines that are chain drive? i like the idea of it considering its auto with high low ranges. would make the ride more enjoyable not having to shift.

Here's an idea.



Minimal custom fabbed / machined components. Lower cost (junk yard sourcing). Reverse. Huge gear ratio range between the CVT clutch and Geo Metro tranny (crawl through the woods and over rocks or haul butt through the desert). Minimal shock loading components because of the CVT clutches from the snowmobile. No shifting and no clutching necessary - the CVT would work kind of like a slipper clutch - but you could still use all 4 gears in the Metro tranny when you want to.

The Honda CRV CV axles are long and with the flex capability of the joints, they should give you the travel you're looking for.

If I was building a mini "King of the Hammers" buggy (which sounds kind of like what you're going for), this is what I would do.

Minor corrections if I may:


Gold Wings never used a V anything, either a flat 4 or the current flat 6.....also known as a Boxer.

Like the OP mentioned, the Raptor 660 or current 700 both use a "built in reverse".



Don't know what the OP's budget or skills are, but if you're not concerned with break neck speed; the Rhino uses the above mentioned motors and all the 4X4 running gear is already there........just build the suspension to your specs/needs

The same could be said of a Polaris RZR.

Cost is always a factor. i think i Will go with the raptor 660. they got decent torqe and built in reverse. plus im very good at fixing them. i thought about using a kfx 700 or trx700 engine but the price of them is past my engine budget. thanks for the replys guys.

I picked up one of these Carter GTR 250 engines for $200,complete,ready to run for my kids kart.I dont know anything about them but there seems to be a lot of parts available for them and I've read they are pretty reliable.

Those little motors are reliable and fun i got a go kart for my kids that uses the same motor. Besides the electrical there easy to work on also. The buggy im building is a good bit beefier so i think i need a bit more power to chug it along.
