I was working on a planetary in a transfer case the other day. Got to thinkin, Reverse?? Minibuggy?? Maybe??

Didn't spend much time on the idea but thought I'd toss it out here (maybe already done). There are pleanty of top notch minds here that could work out the details if it is a workable idea.

    Anywho, My quick thoughts.

    Small, self contained, sealed planetary.

Sun gear is input from engine. Could be machined with a boss to exept standard bolt on chian sprockets or stubbed with a 1" keyed shaft for driven CVT's.

Ring gear would be a cup that would encompass the planet carrier and be the drive for output. Slide over a 1"(?) keyed shaft or whatever is needed.

The key to making it work would be to be able to lock the unit together for forword then have some sort of mechanism to unlock and hold the planet carrier from revolving for reverse.

Go here and click on the Sun input, Ring output button. It shows the motion I'm trying to describe.

    HowStuffWorks "How Gears Work"

I'm thinking this could be a fairly small light weight unit that could be slid over and keyed to any size driven shaft. It wouldn't really do any work except in reverse so it wouldn't have to be built to take max loads through the planetary.

Might be pie in the sky. Maybe already done or tried and dumped. Dono.

Just random thoughts from me's brain (lol).

I reserve the right to change my mind if someone can prove to me it needs replacing.

I was also thinking of this set up, thought about using a small winch motor they use planetary gears.

I am doing some what same thing with transfercase for reverse. Got idea from Blue dragon on here and his build. look him up take 4 low from suzuki sammy transfer grind off gears teeth weld on 3/4 " industrial sporket and make a chain drive in oil bath so when put into 4 low it will be reverse. Alot more to it transfercase is also backwards compared to in samurai so why when put in 4 low it is now reverse see write up from him or you can get his link in my build 4x4ST3 build i have yet to machine mine but i have 2 cases and he has no issues with his behind a 1000 MC engine much better than the starter motor setup

I am guessing you all knew but cars with automatic transmissions get reverse this way.
Now that NOBAMA has PROVEN he is the absolute WORST president in the history of history Jimmy Carter can thank him for stealing the dunce crown.

Lets hope the next guy repeals NObama care along with the rest of the stupid crap this blight on our windshield has done.

    Yup.

Planetarys are cool. Tons of stuff can be done with them. Can be simple or complicated.

They are a weird critter though.

Even a simple one can eff with the human brain.

To watch one work the eyes need to revolve in opposite directions.

Makes one feel 3/4 hammered if you stare to long.

My brain doesn't need help in that regard.

They offer gear reduction too of course. I was trying once to imagine if it could be used right on the rear "spool" to give reverse there and a smaller sprocket to boot for more ground clearance.

I am pretty sure it could.

I should relook at it cause if so the housing around it ought to be able to be made easy enough on a lathe.

Really good. Design has been fully modeled up on the computer, gears are about half built, quite a few components are here and i'm just waiting on my machinist to get some time to start machining the cases.

I also have to build the inline cush drive between the motor and reverse and a custom spool assembly that will get the flange to flange distance down to about 5", but those are already modeled as well...
