I am looking to build my own buggy and was wondering where i could find IRS rear axles for my project, such as the type commonly found on sandcars. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to MBN!

The answer is not as simple as finding axles as those are widely available. Let's start at the beginning: What are you building - give details.

i am looking to build a small buggy about 1000 pounds and with a 1000cc streetbike motor.
I would like to make it as compact as possible and a single seater. Independent suspension all the way around. Probably between 15 and 20 inches of travel in the rear and 20 to 25 up front. I would like to do the majority of the fabrication myself due to a low budget. So if i could find an axle that would mate with this setup that would be awesome!

As Gene said it depends on what you are looking for. For example if you want to use VW type 1 or 4 CV's in your build then you can get 33 spline axles in several different lengths from several vendors like EMPI or Sway Away and many others. If you decide to go with bigger and stronger 930 CV's then 28 spline axles are needed which are also readily available from several manufacturers as mentioned above.

For an idea of what is out there try this. Go to CIP1.com and navigate to the dune buggy tab in the VW section. Then click the rear suspension tab. Several 28 and 33 spline axles will come up and that will give you a bit of an idea of the range of lengths and spline counts. The prices there are decent.

Also if you are in the learning mode go to blindchickenracing.com and review the CV section there (how to ==> cv's and axles ==> cv joints 101). It is a good summary of the different CV's and their measurements, the angle they will flex etc.

Thanks, blindchickenracing was really helpful. I will probably have to use the 930 CV's.
Can i buy the CVs, axle shafts, stub axles and all as a package or do i have to buy it separately and the assemble it all? Also what is the whole unit calles and what it the center box thing called? Thanks again! (sorry, i have extremely little knowledge of any of this stuff)

You can buy the components separately. The thingy in the cente is a "center carrier" if it has a simple sprocket and brake rotr. Otherwise it is typicaly referred to as "FNR" because it is a Forward and Reverse box. some are differentials and some are live axle.

A differential will allow the use of cutting brakes and a live axle will not. A limited slip (LSD) is like a live axle under power so it can't use a turning brake when the power is on.

Most of us recommend building a car by designing from the wheels in. That means you figure out all the suspension stuff and then build a frame that works with the design. Doing it the other way often ends with compromise and words like "I should have listened".

So keep asking questions and read, read, read.

You still have to assemble the kits and it would depend on the axle length you need. You can get 19 1/4 and 20 1/4 930 axle kits:
    EMPIUS.COM : 2009 Catalog, Page 162 - Suspension & Steering

If you want longer, you'll have to buy separate:
    EMPIUS.COM : 2009 Catalog, Page 160 - Suspension & Steering

You cannot order from those pages, but many companies sell EMPI parts.

If I use a axle 19 1/4" long is this the total length of the axle? And how much longer from the center flange to the outer flange do you need for the axle and the 2 CVs?

Yes it is specified in terms of total axle length. The CV cups are dished on the inside so you need to allow for that spacing as well as about 1/4" for axle end clearance. Also don't forget that depending on what sort of suspension design you go with you will probably need some plunge capability somewhere in the drive system as well.

Thanks rowycoracing, so I should have my flange faces 19 1/2" apart? I am using dual a arms, so what am I allowed for plunge, and will that be taken up in the dished flange face?
