View Full Version : couple more FXT buggies

03-14-2018, 02:00 PM
Time to get my build fix on.

So my son is 17,, gonna be 18 later this year. taught him to run the mill , lathe,, work in my shop the past couple of years.
he is taking welding in school , done with mig and currently wrapping up tig

I have never built a complete buggy with him though,,,,,,, my bad as a Dad,,, always working

so we are going to build a couple of FXT buggies,,, one for him and one for me that we are going to keep.
after all,,,,, I don't want my race track turning into a grass track
so I can also get my racing fix taken care of too

these builds may take longer as we are doing them in or spare time, after work and after he gets out of school and work and homework.
but these builds are not about how quick we get them done, but more about teaching / learning
well,,,, his will take longer. I have a little free time right now and busting out a roll cage this week

the pics are all gone from the original FXT thread so I am going to add a couple of finished FXT pics to start
then I'll add some current build pics as we go

Very cool! Glad to see you back here.

That blue one is really sharp!

03-14-2018, 04:18 PM
Thanks Bull !

yes, I loved the black & blue one too, one of my favorites

picking colors is going to be tough on these, I've already done all my favorite color combos over the years.
doesn't mean I can't repeat,, cool is still cool

03-14-2018, 10:58 PM
Such a pity all the old pics are gone. [smilie=dunno.gif]

03-14-2018, 11:51 PM
Ya , I hear ya Jimmy,
shame to loose such a wealth of pictorial information MBN has built up over the years

maybe some day I will find the time to go back thru my build threads and re load pics , but we all know how that goes LOL

so my son comes home today and tells me he got first in the state high school welding competition ( in Michigan)
they gave him a bunch of gifts, welding gloves, ,,,,etc
super Proud Dad here and ready to build these chassis's with the state champ lol

03-15-2018, 12:40 AM
Nothing wrong with a bit of young bull old bull rivalry.

Give the young fella a chance to see that grey hair is earned and wisdom is gleaned through the passage of time and countless cockups best never repeated.

03-15-2018, 11:32 AM
Congrats to the state welding champ! That's awesome!

03-15-2018, 08:04 PM
Wow! state champ look out! Congrats!
That track looks amazing, I'd love to race you guys on there some day!

03-16-2018, 02:01 PM
Thanks Jerm
Track is fun, 4 different corners , some sweeping some tight. .2 miles long and 30 plus ft wide.
perfect for this size race buggy and power plant

need to add nerf bars and add some welds (just tacked right now) then pull it from the build table / jig plate
then finish building it in the rotisserie so we can start the next one on the build table

I hope everybody takes note of all the rusty circles on the jig plate LOL
second shift is brutal,,, and usually thirsty ;)

03-22-2018, 10:44 PM
fully welded on the rotisserie, just added floor, rear shock mounts, mirror mounts, lower window net mount, brake lock mount,,,,, and a few other things. Next is dash, vents, aluminum body, fuel cell and spoiler

LOL, yup big azz speaker,,, couple of them , all the following will be non-buggy related but cool man stuff :D

9 speakers total on shop side and a 1000 watt receiver . it pounds [smilie=rockout3.gi:
Plus a 12' movie screen built into the wall with a projector mounted from the ceiling.
have had many movie nights and Rock band on the big screen

we always have music cranking during work and play,,,,, I find silence deafening
I have separate systems in my office and the lounge AKA the Bon Jody Bar n Grill

Although....I bet there's a pizza oven around somewhere? Or some other meat searing device?

I'm speechless man! Great job all the way around!

over the years I have trained at least a dozen students from the local Vocational skill center for machining and welding.
when the students complete certain requirements at school,,, they can go to work at a business for 4 hours a day instead of going to the skill center to learn
So Jesse just completed all the requirements at the skill center and can go work for a company welding for the rest of the school year.
instead of going to school in the morning, he gets to train and work with me
probably will be mostly building his buggy

I really like the looks of these buggies. Have you ever considered a big quad engine instead of an industrial?

Thanks, yes I have considered quad engines in this frame.
Also 4 stroke snowmobile engines. There is room to do either
we did a 450 quad engine in our XK450 model and it performed great

in our gallery scroll to the green and black XK450 album

Pics of the XK450
nice thing about this engine is reverse is built right in to the engine

Sooo nice!!

Do you always use a swingarm rear? How much different does it feel compared to independent?

The MXT, FXT, XK450 models have swing arm style rear suspension
the DXT, XK1000 ,SS1000, SS630R models all have dual A arms on the rear

Dual A arm is a better ride, but swing arm is more budget friendly
