View Full Version : Convert quad spindles question.

I bought Raptor spindles for my Shredder hybrid. I was able to get the hubs, rotors and calipers...which I thought would be a good way to go.

After getting the plans I see how the Raptor spindles have the geometry all wrong.

I have an idea of what I want to do.

The snout? looked like it could press out so I tried it:

Easy to get apart with my Harbor Frieght press:

Plan is to cut off the excess and leave the caliper mounts:

The snout is metal, so I plan on building the spindle part according to the SII plans, but welding the Raptor piece on instead of the 5" bolt the plans call for.

The plans call for 1" OD DOM with 3/4"ID.

Is there any square tube that would be an equal to that? I was just thinking that it would be nicer to weld the snout to a flat surface.

DARWIN did the same thing basically but he made up all the parts whereas I just want to do a simple hack to the Yamaha parts.

Pic is Darwins:

Its too bad you already cut it up. If you had the matching arms that go with those spindles, then just bolt up the entire arm and spindle assembly. Thats what I did but I used YFZ450 arms and spindles.

No arms and already started building the Shredder arms so all is good there.

Wondering about the square tube though.

After seeing more styles of spindles, I really want to build one that is double sheared. If I understand the term correctly.

I ordered high misalignment heims to use instead of the balljoints the plans call for...was just going to bolt them down like the balljoints but then I saw the more proper way to build them.

I was thinking either square tube or a C channel and then mount the heims vertically.

I think they would work as the one has 64 of misalignment and the other 61.

Can anyone verify that it would work or does that only work when you take a normal heim and add the spacers?

These are what I ordered:

I havent had problems with the square tube arms. The raptor spindles would have saved a lot of fab time.

I think I am going to check out some square tube for the spindles instead of the round the plans call for...flat surface to tack the Raptor snout to.

I could also make them in plate if I turn the heims vertical and make them double shear easier.

Northern Tool sells a square spindle heres the link

I wanted to drill steel plate and then box it all in with my heims mounted vertically, but with my equipment, drilling those large bolt holes is a bitch.

So, I ended up building based off the Shreddder plans with a few modifications. It's not double shear like I wanted, but for this buggy should work.

After welding the round tube, I squared it off with angle for some flat surfaces to work with.

I pressed the caliper mount back onto the snout and looks like everything will work.

I need some jam nuts or spacers for my heims as they need to be 5" center to center, so disregard the miscellaneous washers, etc.

I am really hating my welder right now...the spool was sticking and then "recoiled" so now when I weld, the wire tends to "pop" on me. Splatter gun looks like crap anyway, but even more now! [smilie=gun_bash.gi:

Oh well...it's a woods buggy so it will be covered with mud and probably get bent anyway! It won't be pretty but hopefully it will be finished!
