View Full Version : Hayabusa oil and radiator cooling quick question

Hey guys quick question. I have a honda civic radiator with a shroud and fan. I recently upgraded to a busa and was thinking about upgrading to a larger radiator like this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALUMINUM-RACING-RADIATOR-BOLT-ON-10-BLADE-FAN-SHROUD-89-94-NISSAN-240SX-S13-SR20-/180779189836?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3A240SX&hash=item2a1747864c&vxp=mtr). Is this overkill? Should I just still with the standard civic radiator with shroud? It will be mounted up high with direct air flow.

Second question on the busa oil cooler. Can I just take the stock oil cooler and mount it directly in front of the main radiator? The stock oil cooler does not have a fan and I figured mounting it in front will help it cool. Anything bad about this? This would mean the oil cooler will be mounted up high above the air box with the main radiator.

I would not put oil cooler in front of rad. Civic rad is gonna be small to cool a busa so you dont want any blockages. The stock busa rad fan fit the oil cooler nicely. Mount it down between seats or off to side.

The radiator your lookin at on fleebay would be my choice deff not overkill and a sweet price also if I read it right it comes with the two fans I paid dam near 100 for one fan:D

Thanks for the replies. My 07 busa kit didn't come with a fan (thought maybe it never had one). Possibly it was removed. If I get the larger radiator, should it be ok with the oil cooler in front of it or should I just get a fan and mount it elsewhere? Thanks,

I would get a larger oil cooler.
I run a 9 row in front of the civic rad. with shroud.
GSXR 1000 and on the RC51
Have never had a cooling problem on either car,
But I'm in Michigan.
If you're in a warmer climate, I say go larger on both and mount the oil cooler in front of the radiator.

Thanks for the tips Rick but quick question; The stock cooler is 12.5"x5x5". I looked up a 9 row cooler (http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-ROW-10AN-POWDER-COATED-ALUMINUM-ENGINE-TRANSMIS-SION-RACING-OIL-COOLER-SILVER-/350724123008?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item51a8c96980&vxp=mtr) and its dimensions are 13.00" x 3.75" x 2.00, not really larger. You still recommend spending the $45 on an aftermarket one over stock?

Run the factory BUSA oil cooler in front of the civic radiator with the single fan that comes with the civic radiator PULLING thru the radiator with a shroud for the fan. Mount the radiator where it has air flow (not behind the seat or something like that) and you'll be fine. I've done it on two buggies so far that I run in the SoCal deserts and once in a great while the thermostat from the bike cooling system will turn the fan on. Mostly when I drive the buggy as I tend to push it the hardest of anyone that drives it :D

There you go.
But I still say get a bigger than stock oil cooler.
For the same reason you want the larger than Busa stock radiator.
You are pushing more weight. Upgrade the entire system.
Not just the radiator...... Make sense?

Gotcha thanks for the tips. I already went with the larger radiator so I'll sell the civic rad/shroud/fan one of these days.

Question Rick is on the dimensions. The 9 row one you recommended isn't really larger than the stock or so it seems. Please look at the last post I put, is that not the correct oil cooler you are recommending? I think it may be thicker, maybe that helps... Thanks again,

I wonder how the powder coating effects the heat transfer on the fins? Have to think about that a bit and ask some of the thermal engineers at work.....

That's the one I used, but I'm saying use one that's larger than the stock Busa cooler.
There are others. Universal 16 Row Powder Coated Aluminum Engine Transmis​sion Oil Cooler Silver | eBay (http://m.ebay.com/itm/170886950579?nav=SEARCH)
I have made shrouds that carried larger than 9 row coolers.

Ok thanks Rick, I gotcha. Forgot you were talking about a smaller motor with the 9 row. I'll probably go this route, thanks again.

I bought a 25 row derale cooler to mount down low between and behind the seats for my new busa rail. It has a decent fan on it as well, but it is pricey. For the radiator, I am using the same as king sand cars, which is a dual pass, and about 50% larger than the civic radiator I had on my gsxr 750. It keeps the engine cool enough even in 90 degree heat.
