Hi All,

I will be starting a project soon " R1 rhino conversion " and will need some advise and help on which route to take.

Would anybody help me out with a list of parts needed to complete this project ? Also which year is a good R1 motor to purchase?

pictures would be great if anybody has some.

Would love to learn how to make my own suspension :D.

thank you in advance.

Sorry forgot to ask, if its not too much to ask. I list in the correct order to get started would be great.

Thanks,

welcome sandpirate

are you looking to keep a lot of the parts stock on the rhino?

if not trying to keep close to stock, I have several customers incorporating our rear assembly into rhinos and rzrs
Motorcycle Buggy Complete Rear drivetrain & suspension (http://www.protodie.com/Motorcycle-Buggy-Complete-Rear-drivetrain-suspension_p_187.html)

but with this you would loose 4 wheel drive.
then again , not sure if any of the R1 conversions I have seen keep the 4x4

welcome to MBN

I was actually looking at your web site but wasn't sure if I could use your parts. I would like to keep as much as I can that already is on the rhino and then gradually change everything to beef it up.

I have read that you cannot save the 4x4 which is fine by me. I also was thinking of having no reverse for now and then adding it later.

Which parts would you recommend that I can use?

Don't think about loosing reverse - you NEED it. Put an RPM FNR box in it, keep reverse and have a trans that can deal with the HP of putting something like an Apex in it.

Reverse is back on the things to get. Does anybody know what the cost would end up being? am I better off getting a rzr or one already completed?

We'll it's also some thing like this. (Others correct me of I'm wrong)
So take what you would pay to get it done with you doing all of the work.
Now triple that budget. And that's just to get out of the garage. Add more for getting it how it works well.

+1 for Protodie stuff/RPM

Can you build?
Are you mechanically inclined, know how to weld, have a Welder, Angle grinders, Chop saw, sawzall, etc on the tools.
If not then your better off buying one already built and then upgrading it from there.

R1 you will probably not need 4x, but definitely need Reverse.

If you wanted to go 4x to do rock climbing and stuff like that then your better off going with a V-twin engine like a TL 1000. The V-twin engine torque kicks in alot sooner in the RPM range then a 4 cylinder.

If you put in the time and labor, you'd still probably be under what you would pay from buying a RZR and have a better running buggy. As long as you take your time to research and do things right the first time around rather then half ass-ing it and having to do things twice.

You can pick up Rhino chassis for pretty cheap these days, could be a good start point.

06 rhino project (http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/sno/4097699192.html). heres a chassis to start with. With doing everything yourself your gonna be close to 15000 dollars doing it right. It will be cheaper if you have a rhino with long travel already. you can find a sr1 rhino cheaper then that if you look for one.

I do have a rhino 660 already and do have some fabrication experience and my welds are decent. I will be taking a look at the rhino frame and going from there.

Thanks for the help.

Did you ever complete your conversion? I'm in the Southbay and I did the Weller Racing conversion and then quickly pulled all that out and went with a Jeffco reverse box.
