not sure this is really the place for this but l cant see anywhere better ?

l am probably just rambling a bit here but l have this idea that might or might not work,
l have a need or at least use for a little light weight pick up that l can use out in the fields to carry out a load more tree planting this winter,
l have tried all sorts of 4 wheel drive over the last few years landrovers toyotas jeeps g wagens etc but they are all to heavy and end up sinking in the mud and then need digging/pulling out with an excavator

then l stumbled on a john deere gator looks just the thing, light weight and a pick on the back to throw all the whips spades etc, l realise over your side they are probably common and you keep one in the shed for use in maintaining the garden lol, but over here they are a bit more harder to come by and hence more pricy, a lot more pricey if you want that actually moves under its own steam, anyway one came along described as a good runner slight rust and cheap too, alarm bells should have started ringing but l am a bit deaf and bought it anyway,
mistake with a capital M it runs fine but the bit rusty part was a little understated,

looks like l will be welding forever and l dont fancy that much, wouldent mind a new chassis for it but l have more chance of knitting fog than finding one over here, can anyone point me at some gator forums where ther might be pics of a gator rebuild so as l can see whats involved in making a new chassis from scratch ??

anyway that aside things moved on when l started investigating gator a bit more deeply, seems the one l bought cheap isent the best for my application the later HPX would be better suited as its a little larger and 4 wheel drive plus can be had with a cab to keep out the chilly weather
l have to say l like the look of the HPX much better it looks much more purposeful or aggressive

l think apart from they got the steering wheel on the wrong side at the factory that looks pretty cool
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/andyhaycock/T2eC16Vw0E9szNZIYvBQjREJOHKg60_57.jpg

so thats what l think l want but over here it costs an arm and a leg for one of them, around $16,000 l think, far to many noughts in that price for me to even look at them for half a second,

so this brings me to the point of the post, l think l will make one from scratch, well thats what l started out thinking untill l got playing around with the bonnet( hood) and wings ( fenders) of the gator l have and an old vitara ( sidekick ) chassis, granted l would need the later HPX wings and bonnet but they are available on your ebay cheaply so this is what l am now pondering

there might be a bit of an issue with the height of the engine when it has all its fuel injection gear fitted but l can get round this by removing it and fitting just a throttle body and converting it to run on propane (lpg)
l can use forklift truck lpg bottles which is good as over here they dont attract tax and so are much cheaper than petrol (gas ) why do you call petrol gas when its clearly a liquid ? by the way

the other advantage to using a vitara rolling chassis is that over here l can keep the reg number ( title ? ) and use it on the road with no further inspections,
now l was thinking of making the front end out of fiberglass with gator type bonnet and wings, trans tunnel will need to be a big wider/longer to cover the 5 speed box etc,
as l cant just take a mould of the gator stuff for obvious reasons l thought l would have a go at making a patten out of styrene or foam using a hot wire and basing the shape loosly on a gator,
l like the lights in the front wings one but they might suffer damage there ?
there seems to be plenty of 2.5 lt V6 vitara going cheap around here so that would make one hell of a powerful gator lol
not sure if l can squeese the engine under the hpx style bonnet but l guess a V6 is shorter than a 4 banger if l have to stretch the front end much l might have to alter the shape a little and head in the direction of the sporty version

there we go as mad as a hatter !!

]why do you call petrol gas when its clearly a liquid ?

Gasoline /ˈɡęsəliːn/, or petrol /ˈpɛtrəl/ is a transparent, petroleum-derived liquid that is used primarily as a fuel in internal combustion engines. It consists mostly of organic compounds obtained by the fractional distillation of petroleum, enhanced with a variety of additives. Some gasolines also contain ethanol as an alternative fuel. In North America, the term gasoline is often shortened in colloquial usage to gas, but some people use the term petrol, which is the common name in the UK and elsewhere in the

One of these sould like what you're explaining. Would this body go on the Sidekick chassis.

Always liked this shape and a monster truck lift would be sweet.

lol, it would be pretty easy to make a new chassis for a gator as its mostly flat sheet with a few folds here and there but l dont have time right now as l have a couple of other projects on the go, maybe l will come back to it next year and knock up a new chassis when l have more time

actually you are probably right about the size and the way the engine and box are arranged transversly would make it easier to get the front plastics to fit and hide all the drive train

this would be much easier to package at the front

but there are a couple of draw backs too, subaru justy's are not very common any more over here which means the ones you can find tend to be dear where as vitara's are 10 a penny but of more relevance is that a vitara/sidekick has a chassis and a justy dose not which means getting a self built justy gator on the road legally would be all but impossible, well hard work anyway, the vitara on the other hand is just a rebody so dosent need anything at all not even an inspection,

but a vitara will be more work in re designing the plastics to cover the engine and gearbox as you can see in this early pic of my lawn mower project

a lower engine would help maybe a subaru flat four !!!!!!!

hello ironknot

yes an X90 body will fit on fit on a vitara/kick chassis as they are one and the same thing apart from the bumper mounting detail, infact the pic l posted of the rolling chassis was an x90 one you can see the body in the garage
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh311/andyhaycock/019640x480.jpg

l like these little cars and they are still very cheap over here, l have had a few well quite a few through my hands

that body went from birmingham up to scotland and was fitted on to a vitara chassis to use as an offroader,
couldent find an engine crane that day lol,and wife still drives one on the road

the rolling chassis l posted that is sat on my drive recieved a V8 and was used for a buggy

Don't know if you've seen this but its got hot wire and the result is spot-on.
