ProtoDie

This chassis is the same as the last 2 seat Protolite SS1000 so probably not too much new info
Here is a link to the last build thread

http://www.minibuggy.net/forum/projects-progress/13264-protolite-ss-1000-new-2-seat-build.html

This one will be more of a final assembly log

I just picked up parts from powder coat last Friday

Roll cage is Extreme Chrome

Body panels are Candy red. This is extreme chrome with transparent red over top to give it depth

Suspension and engine cradle are gloss black.

I hope to have this together in the next 2 weeks,,,,we will see

As always superb work. I love your stuff. Whats with all the pins sticking out of the body pannels?

ProtoDie
03-28-2011, 05:59 PM
Those are called cleco pins.

They are awesome.
It is a spring loaded pin that holds temporarily thru your rivet holes.
There is a special pliers that releases the spring tension to put them in & out,,,holding the panels on while you work.

Huge time saver when doing body panels

Wow that is super clean looking.. that extreme chrome looks good against the red and that red is nice.
Very clean and great color choice. I like it a lot.
Looking forward to seeing this one done and completed.
As always great job.

Thanks guys,
I am excited for this one.
There will be pearl white stripes, one on the raised center hood and then 2 over the roof.
Similar to the last black & grey car.

The red powder coated dash is aluminum, and I will CNC engraving this so all the design & lettering comes thru silver /aluminum.

There are so many well thought out details on this car. I like the the passenger and driver foot guards. When I first got my car the passengers were always hitting the throttle pedal. I like that you not only created a "passenger foot stopper" but you also created a driver foot stopper that seems like it would allow the driver to just rest their foot right against it and follow the angle as they depress the pedal.

Thanks for sharing the updates, its fun to see these cars in their assembly stages.

Very nice.. really looking good and I am digging on the craddle so you can do the engine rear end etc and then attach to the car.. nice.

The little details is what makes the car stand out as already pointed out.
Very cool and I look forward to seeing the graphics and more.

Keep us updated and once again very nice car, well done.

Thanks Tut

Worked slowed,,,,,other stuff going on this weekend.
We went to a 3/8 banked oval dirt track test & tune with 2 of the older cars.
Track was pretty rough but it was fun.

We met some guys who race mini late model cars with motorcycle engines.
Similar weight and power,,,they were pretty cool.
The one they had there had a 1000cc honda in it

We may go test at another track in 2 weeks with 4 of those cars,,,and 3 of ours to see how different they are on the track.
So I need mine done in less than 2 weeks.

Here are a couple of pics

CNC engraving the powdercoated dash

Yes I will get more info on those cars.

Talon,,,,,,Yes , that would be nice to hit a show.

I love to race,,,but I am struggling with throwing it on the clay dirt track for it's 1st real time out.......lots to clean afterwards.

Id like to hit the dunes for some photos and fun before the track.

We will see,,,,,,right now it is just get it done,,,then figure out where to play:D

I am waiting on electrical until It gets back from graphics. I am putting the panels on today and bringing it to graphics.
Should have it back tomorrow,,,,then on to wiring

The dash with the etching is so clean and very neat. Great idea.
I was thinking of graphics for mine.... or a wrap? Not sure.. but looking at how nice yours is I really want something now..

Oh heck ya take it to show for sure.. that's a very clean car and the details people will just dig on.
The more they look the more they will see.

Good luck on the wiring, nerf bars etc. and getting everything done in time.. after your work of course gets done. ;)

Sounds cool about hitting the track with all the other buggies.. keep us posted and have someone take pics please.

As always keep up the great work seriously well done.

Thanks for the kind words guys,,,,,,,,,,,always appreciated.

Production,,,non- buggy work has taken over 1/2 the shop for a bit,,,,slowing me down.

So I will not have it ready for a dirt track test & tune,,,,which could be alright to keep it clean a bit longer.

Pretty serious about street legal,,,so that may be my focus once I get back to it.

Graphics,,,,,,

cost wise
pre painted aluminum and vinyl stickers is the cheapest,,,,and easiest to replace when racing.

here is an example
http://ptlracing.com/images/phocagallery/Main-Gallery/MXT/thumbs/phoca_thumb_l_protolite%20mxt01.jpg

It is a toss up in cost between powdercoated panels and vinyl stickers,,,,,vs full wrap.

full wrap cost between $700 & $1000
powder coated panels,,,,,$200 ish & 4-500 vinyl stickers

Big body panels would lend towards full wrap & more design to break it up.
Although I have done it on single seaters too.

this is a full wrap on bare aluminum
http://ptlracing.com/images/phocagallery/Main-Gallery/DXT1000/thumbs/phoca_thumb_l_dsc05894.jpg

Smaller body panels and more style in the frame can lend more towards other options and need less graphics.

My 2 seat SS 1000, I have the roll cage designed to where I want to,,,,well,,,not hide it, or use the body lines as part of the car appearance.
So I chose to powdercoat the panels and go with a less fancy,,,classic type graphic design.

Your buggy is coming along sweet. What kind and size of tires are on your red 2 seater build? Also to make that buggy street legal it says you need a differential gear do you happen to know what that means? and also again... bumpers?? Do you have to make some bumpers or is a "tube frame" good?
Thanks

Looks great! When you run the dual civic radiators do you just tee off and run them in series, then splice back to the return line?

Thanks,

Bumpers,,,,,,,have not crossed that line yet.

plan on tubing, and i may put some front turn signals in...the front.

it will come down to the "cop" who checks it out to say if it is good enough.

I know there are a ton of old school dune buggies in Michigan that struggle to pass.
Near the dunes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,they may be less strict because you are going from A to Z,,,,,campsite to dunes...no big deal.

Daily driver, and taking it to the city may have a few more pull overs :)

I just want to bring my kids to school,,,,,the local dairy ranch,,,,,,church,,,,,walmart,,,,,,well any excuse to drive it some where,,,fast:D

we will see in due time

I don't think you'll have any trouble getting it street legal... Just don't take it to a MSP trooper to sign off on... (I have signed off on buggies using hand signals, staduim/ fan air horn can zipped-tied to the frame, and a hand held squeegy for a wiper). The way I see it if an off-road guy is just looking to get legal so that he can legally drive to the gas station or ice cream shop from the trail then what's the big deal? If you need any help let me know, I'm in s.e. MI

Wow,,,,,,,,,2 weeks have gone by.

All wired and tested,,,,,,,,,,,Finish cleaning up,,,, wrapping electrical tonight / tomorrow.

Could be driving it sometime this weekend.

Here is a nice electrical wiring tip for GSXR motors.

Clutch switch can be tied together,,or grounded out to bypass.
When the GSXR motor is in neutral or the clutch is in,,,,,the fuel pump cuts out at 12,900 rpms. Motor would otherwise red line at 13500
Not to big of a deal,,still plenty of power.

decided to work on this though,,,,,,,to get that last 600 rpms.

A: thought about using a brake light pressure switch like I have wired in to the brakes.....this would work when the clutch pedal is pressed in.
Problem is, I have to press the clutch in to start.
Quite often,,,,I like to start the car without being in it,,,so this would not be as nice.

B: decided to put a relay in. Power from the start push button is run to a relay. Clutch switch and ground wire are tied into the relay.

so when you press the start button,,,,it momentarily closes the relay and grounds out the clutch switch, letting the motor start,,,,then is dis-engaged to not limit the RPMs at 12,900,,,,,,,,all in a split second.

Tested in the shop,,,,,,,,,works great.

Running more & more relays. Also adding a seperate fan relay in.

with dual radiators and dual fans,,,,it is close to blowing the stock bike fuse. This should take care of that.

nuff typing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,back to work

ProtoDie

Finished it up yesterday,,,,,,,,,,ready to pull out of the shop,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and the rain came down:(

Today was nicer and drove it out for some photos,,,,and a couple of test runs.

Took it down to an abandoned industrial drive and opened it up on the asphalt[smilie=ecstatic.gi:

AWESOME!! I needed to unleash some speed.

I need to add limit straps to the front for the street and some tracks.
19" of travel is good for the dunes,,,,,,,,,,but hooking up on the pavement,,,,,,,,,,,,,brings the nose up like the bow of a boat.

I want to keep it low for the street,,,,,,,,,and this helps the weight transfer from front to rear.

turn signals are in the side mirrors, and brake light / turn signals in the spoiler,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,plus it has a horn. Maybe in the next month I will check on street legal

Hope to hit Silver Lake this week.

Man O MAN That thing is just a sight to see. Smokin hot. Love the detail. Best of luck getting it street legal. I think if it does get certified, you just opened up a whole new can of worms as far as marketing and ability to sell to that market. And my compliments on dealing with your honesty situation at the shop. It always pays to do the right thing.

One of my favorite threads. Thanks for posting. Snoopy

Jody, where can I buy this flex hose your using here in this pic? and do you have to do anything special to get it to seal up at the clamps?

I am going to have to put my big cooler back on my car and rather than cut up and slice 3 more random hoses this might be nice to do.

I am assuming your using this just to do your corners?

Please note that when assuming usually the first three letters play the biggest part of the words description. lol So any and all info your willing to share is very much appreciated!!

it is stainless steel flex hose

I use it complete from engine to rad, or rad to rad

1" to 1 1/4" ID rubber hose & clamps on the ends to couple it to the rad or engine.

I believe this gives us additional cooling as the ribbed stainless radiates heat out quicker than just rubber hose.

it is sold by the foot & as far as I know, we are the only ones using this. Here is a link to our catalog where it is at

Heading to the dunes for a much needed family vacation up to Silver Lake.

We will be there July 9-16 but most of our dune time will be during the week when it is not busy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,can't wait.

it has been 5 years since I took a full week off from work.

If anybody is up there during that time,,,look me up. I will have the red SS 2 seater #17

I just took some pics of one of our MXT single seat buggies next to my 2 seat for comparison,,,and thought I would share.
MXT is a 3 point swing arm design on the rear with a 13hp motor, built for older kids & adults to race,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and for us older adults who think we are kids,,,,,,,and race:D

MXT is just under 400lbs and 13hp,,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe more when we tweak on the motor.
SS1000 is 1100 with 185 hp

Great idea protodie, I thought that something like that should of been out years ago. Nice economical racing. Do you have a cost for that car?

the MXT with a 13hp motor is $5000

This one is for a customer who owns a excavating company and some land.
he has earth movers, dozers, loaders,,,,,,and loves to race.
We were his pit crew on his late model race car last weekend,,,,,that's fun too.

he just built a 1/4 mile track we just tested these on Monday,,,,,,,,quite fun.

Us adults can run these with our kids racing the same chassis with 6.5 motors and hold the same lap times,,,,,,with the same gear ratios's

affordable racing for the young and old. :)

here is a link to some of our other smaller race pics

To look at what you've built- world class. Top shelf. Beautiful, agressive and CLEAN so clean. Builds like yours and a select few others, are what I can only dream of accomplishing one day. In my line of work, I'd have to hit the lottery so I could set up a machine shop, learn to use all the equipment and then build something like you have. Inspiring. Really. You should be very proud.

Yes it is an XTC. Nice catch.

I was almost going to start a chop ,cut rebuild thread on it,,,still might.

It is a customers, and he is going to use it as a single seater
I redesigned and chopped off the rear section and put in our 1000cc engine cradle / A arm assembly with the RPM gear box.

Front was crazy weak,,,a arms were made out of 5/8 dia tubing or something like that.
So designed new front steering,,, suspension and a arms.

front will now have 17" of travel,,,strong a arms and zero bump steer

Just waiting for the front shocks, and then it's done

You built a model for a custom rebuild project that is awesome!!.. you should do at least a picture thread for all those XTC owners who got hosed...lol
