Hi guys,

I decided that since there is an area for Badland Buggy peeps that I should go there.

This is a continuation of my old thread titled "ST2 Chassis Progressing quickly".

Welcome to the new thread.[smilie=sign_welcom:

Ordered all Heims for buggy from Speedwaymotors.com

Ill have them in hand Thursday I am told by Eric the sales guy I spoke with.

14 heims all together..8 of them were 3/4 inch...ouch$$$ But I didn't skimp! I got all precision heims.

I should have a giant 56 inch Megan Racing aluminum wing on my front porch when I get home from work today!![smilie=giddy.gif]

Got my rear brake pads yesterday in the mail. Might get my mirros today...

Parts gathering and waiting sucks.

Yeah Sodman,
All true!

The Megan Racing wing arrived today. Haven't a clue as to the best place on the rear to put it but I guess I'll figure that out last. I ordered my 2 front shocks today. Fox 2.0 air shocks 10 inch in Black. Im short 2 more bolts I ordered from Fastenal- scoop those up on way home tomorrow. Ps does anyone have a phone number for Doug Heim? I need some of his sweet high misalignment bushings. Other than that I just need some jam nuts and I'll have EVERYtHinG to complete front end from front bumper to steering wheel. I'll have half a roller before Jan is gone.

Man Erwin,

I can't wait until they arrive. I ordered them from an E-Bay store that is called Dirt Cheap Shocks. The guys name is Bryan. His Phone number is 858 231 6449. He has 2 Fox 2.0's just like mine only with the old BLUE caps for $350 for the pair. That's 10 Inch travel. Wheel travel will be like 18 or 19 inches I think is what Rick said...I could be making a mistake...Rick?

Shocks might be here Sat but likey it'll be more like next Thursday...ugh. tick tock.[smilie=banghead.gi:

I have been reading Erwins threads pretty neat. He has already done his rear but I thought I would give you a heads up. You can buy rear bearing housings for about 50.00 that take VW stub axels with 930 cups and bearings. I have the same thing on my full size and have many years of fun no problems They are about 2 7/8 across. I am bulding a ST2 (just gathering parts). I'll have to check to see how much mod it will need to fit. With the VW stubs you can put disc brakes on for about 250.00 they are 4 on 130mm bolt pattern but there is alot of room to drill new pattern any size you want or go with VW Wheel Same goes for the front stub axel are about 25.00 then you can run spindle mount rims
look at Dans Proformance under Suspension Acc I'll have to figure out how to insert pics

Curt,
Thank you for the tip. However, I am not building the rear suspension to B/P. (blue print) Plans call out double a arm..Im choosing to deviate from the plans and fab up semi trailing arms for my rear. My engine is sitting where the center axle is located if you go by the plans.. My rear bearing carrier will be located approx 24 inches aft of what is called out. My ST2 is gonna be LOOOONG. bout 12 of 13 feet prolly.

These are what Erwin shoulda done. But I think Erwin is in this pickle because he started with an Opal diff instead of starting with hubs. (doesnt matter about it being Opal, its just that he shoulda started at the hubs and work his way in.) Since he chose the Opal diff he now has to use axles and hubs that will fit or can be adapted to fit into his diff. His hubs require a bearing that will not fit into his "uprights". Tough spot. But i think it will work out just fine for him. He is getting good suggestions over on his thread..

Thank you again, but Im going a different direction with my rear.

It looks like your having an extended xmas Glok!!!!!

Haha. Yeah guess so. Merry XMas to me...
Just ordered 6 sets of high misalignment spacers for front end.

My main man Rick S realized last night that we have a conflict between my steering column and a horizontal tube on his front end. Hes having to do some cypherin' to sort it out. Compound notching and a bend may be required... So much for keeping engineering cost down... [smilie=banghead.gi:

Rick is really doing a great job for me, we just keep having little snags. When you combine the snags with Rick being a perfectionist it adds a day or two on to your lead time. I know one thing though, when I DO get my parts they will be right on the money.

Waiting is torture.

Indeed, my driveline is a complete mess [smilie=banghead.gi:

If I could do it again, I would do things different! I build a PIRCV from The Edge but then with a sprocket driven differential in the middle and with a R6/R1/Busa engine!![smilie=giddy.gif]

But then, money would be a big issue!

Until now i'm happy with my project but I keep on running against problems [smilie=evilmad.gif]
But step by step I will solve them  It just takes a bit longer..

Mike,
Very good to see your progress! Really neath! [smilie=giddy.gif]

No. Not yet Blueracer. My lands! I'm tryin' not to climb the dang walls waitin for it to get here. He was going to send the rack last week but then we realized he needed to hang on to it so he could fit it. So he waited and will send everything at once. I think he finally has everything figured out. Lower A Arms are built and fully welded-they are complete and only need powder coat and be bolted on. And I hear tell that they be lookin' bad effin' ass. Imma get me some Fox Shocks in the mail this week. 2.0 Air's 10 inch travel, with the new Fox Black Caps. Doug Heim is spoda mail out my 6 HMS bushings for the front end tomorrow (I hope)-he said early next week, which starts Monday, so we'll see.

With any luck Rick can have the last of the work finished up and maybe ship this week..(fingers crossed)[smilie=wbounce.gif]

And yes, Rick is signed up for rear end as well. He already has some of my rear end parts up there at Santa's workshop in Michigan...But we gotta get this bull we're on rode first. I can tell you I'll have semi trailing arms, electric reverse with a Chevy high torque mini starter (it's red and chrome) and a Chevy flex plate. It's also gonna have a 65 tooth rear sprocket and 930 CV's, disc brakes at both wheels. Rear brakes will use 6 piston calipers from the front of a Suzuki TL1000R with Rick's custom rotors. Hubs will be from Dodge Intrepid.

It's going to be one fine looking front end when Rick is finished with it. When you were sitting in the buggy were you making motor noises "don't lie we have spies everywhere". Will you have to do a lot to the front of the ST2 frame to install Rick's front end ? Or will it just weld to the tubes that you cut off , Good luck and keep the pic coming

Basically it'll butt right up to where I cut my front end off. Might a little clamp squeeze here or a little encouragment there...but it oughta tack right on. I will make new "equator" tubes that will tack to my cut equator and tack to the little straight front bumper tube on the out sides.. Basically the same as on Rick build but I have round equator tubes.

It's gonna be saweet.

KrunchWorkz
01-13-2011, 09:08 PM
I think he is talking about these spacers. They are for a 2.5" Fox shock to adapt them to a 1/2 bolt

Pacific Customs Sandrail Parts, VW Parts, Dune Buggy Parts, FOX 2.5 SHOCK BOLT REDUCER SPACER TO REDUCE FROM 5/8 UNIBALL HOLE TO 1/2 BOLT (http://www.pacificcustoms.com/FOX21301036D.html)

Not needed on the 2.0 Air shock or 2.0 series coil overs.

RickS.
01-13-2011, 09:29 PM
When did Fox stop supplying the spacers. The set I just purchased is the first set I've ever got that didn't have them. With the standard spacers the dim between the mounts is 1.25"

KrunchWorkz
01-13-2011, 10:47 PM
No idea. I have just seen the spacers for sale so I figured that was what he was talking about. I only see them for sale for the 2.5 series, nothing for the 2.0. I have never purchased a set of FOX shocks, so I have no idea when they stopped or for that matter had no clue that they even needed any.

Glock n Ballz
01-14-2011, 07:38 AM
If I needed them, why didnt they come with my shocks??
Are these to prevent bottoming out?? Seems I am hearing 2 different stories about these shock because I remember some one on the forum a while back explaining why this was not nec. due to internal bump stops. Now you guys are all asking about these spacers...maybe I just don't understand what the point is. Seems you just taking a way from your stroke length. If you have 14 in shocks and you put a 2 inch spacer or whatever on it, you just made your 14 in into a 12 shock! Why not just buy 12 inchers and save the money and hassle of foolin with these dang spacers?

Some one who knows what they are talking about wanna clear this up, or better yet, I'm gonna call Fox and I'll get the scoop on WTF.

Standby..

K-fab
01-14-2011, 07:53 AM
The spacers - are you talking about the spacers that run through the spherical balls at the ends of the shocks and allow you to use a .500" bolt instead of the .75" hole in the balls? Or do the shocks have a .500" through hole in the spherical balls already? If so, then you just use some precision cut .500" id tubing to make them. (and they're a pain in the arse to install - bolt thru one tab of shock mount, thru the spacer, the spherical ball, spacer then other tab. Holding that second one can be a major headache.

Things look great Glock.

I'll have to head through TX on the way home at the end of Feb and check your ride out and get some REAL Mexican food. Carne Guisada, please.

ErwinBnl
01-14-2011, 08:00 AM
Hahaha the spacers work the same as the misalignment bushings on your rod ends.. when your shock cycles and turns.. the shock itself won't hit the shock mounts... you know what I mean?

I can't describe it good..:o

Like the standard ST2 plans.. the front shocks need to be in a 7 degrees angle from the lower shock mount to the top mount on the 'eyebrow'. When the suspension cycles, the angle will be bigger and the shock itself will hit the mounts without spacers? True?

But that Link from KrunchWorkz goes to a single spacer that costs $7 dollar each, you need 4 per shock? Times 4.. that is 16 times $7 = $112 for the spacers alone? But the FOX 2.0 series already has 1/2" bolting holes? The spacers from the link are for 2.5 who probably have a bigger mounting hole?

Oooooooooh. Think I missed that other post K-FAB. My bad dawg.

We got an extra bedroom all set up if you like to crash and rest up for a night. Let me know exactly when you coming and I'll have things lined up for us. I gotta a good Mexican Joint we can hit. ;)

I'll be headed back from Phoenix, avoiding Ohio for the month of Feb.

I'll have two Briggs cars (or so is the plan still - we'll see if they make it out west), the Dez, a CRF450R and a Husaberg FE450 and my cat with me. 30' long box truck, 24' trailer. I need a little room to park or I can just go ahead and piss of the neighbors and borrow some yard space.

No spacer Erwie...WTF are you talking about? I understand that there internal bump stops not to mention the oil inside. Its like a hydro lock..

Now how did you go from outside the shock to inside of it talking of spacers? Must have been the chips, vodka and drugs. (good combo, btw - I like your thinking!)

I think he is talking about these spacers. They are for a 2.5" Fox shock to adapt them to a 1/2 bolthttp://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/fox21301036d_2.jpg

I dont think you can bolt them w/o some spacer. The sperical bearing is inside the alum top and bottom piece. Meaning bearing is not as wide as shock w/o a spacer. Note, I had to make new ones for lower shock, needed more width.

3/8" sch10 pipe
.675" o.d.
.545" i.d.

would make good spacers maybe just a smidge loose, But i would bet with the seam inside you'd still have to run a 1/2" bit through and be plenty snug. Thats how i did all mine in the past.

I might be wrong, but I have a pretty good grasp of needs to be done(of course I'll need instructions like we talked about)and I think I can git r done by late sun night is all. I won't rush. Well, that's a good question. Right now the front end is really big on my radar, but once that is good to go, I will probably dive into the rear end. I want this thing to be a roller next. So next step is all the step to get a roller. That will be a really big milestone for my project. My lovely wife ha given me an ultimatum that I need to have my buggy done by May. (She has no idea how unrealistic that is) So I am working to that end. I know It'll be after that, but some visual progress will make my life easier here at home.

So, I guess exhaust will happen after Im on 4 wheels. It just so happens that I stopped by Phils Muffler today on Main St in North Fort Worth and spoke with him about fully welding my tacked exhaust when the time came...He agreed and is looking forward to doing the job for me.

Hey glock, You getting anything done or are you just holding out on the pics?

Got my gear shift lever hooked up. Need to weld in a bracket to hold the threaded bit where the shaft comes out of the push pull cable. The cable I am using came out of a Cessna Citation jet. it is the cockpit windshield defog vent cable. Hahaha, pulled that cable from a jet years ago and kept it because I thought maybe i could use it someday on my buggy. That day is here. Customer wanted new cable so i took the "trashed" one home. Except it isnt trash...works perfectly!

Rick is hashing out the details on my rear bearing carrier design. I have decided to go in a different direction than Texaspanther87. I had posted a screen shot of the design prematuerly yesterday but it has been removed. When product is complete ill throw up some pix. This rear bearing carrier set up is going to be very simple and light wieght. In my opinion it'll be way lighter than Yoshi or Protodie's set up. ( i might be wrong but i doubt that). Sorry guys- (yosh n jody).

More to come, keep checking back, wont be but a few more weeks and the bearing carrier will be sorted. Then we attack rear hubs! Using Dodge intrepid hubs, Suzuki TL1000R front brake calipers (6 piston!) and custom rotors made by Rick S. I will be on my own for semi trailing arm design, but i plan to pay a compliment to Tut Tech by emulating his trailing arms. ( That means im going to copy the shit out of his design because I really like the looks of his STA's (Semi Trailing Arms) and I know that Tut knows his shit)!

That ok with you Tut???

Im really thinking i could have this thing going aroung June. That would leave me lots of summer time to have fun.

Well Richard,

How about Glock's K-FABRickSTut Ride. :p

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/GlocknBalls1/Spool2.jpg

This bearing carrier tube (only) was built by my good friend K-FAB. Rick S. turned it pretty and incorporated it into my new Krasch Design Inc. rear bearing carrier assy.

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/GlocknBalls1/Spool1.jpg

Here is an over all shot. Principle: Solid. Light Weight. Small. Simple. Did I mention Solid? loosen 2 bolts on each side then crank bolt head at rear to tighten and loosen chain. Everything is sealed.

Rick's email to me:
Adjustable Spool Features.
Totaly enclosed mechanism.
1 1/2" adjustment or more.
Assembly is unaffected by powder coat thickness.
Collar plates can be flipped inboard for narrow Housings.
Housing can be adjusted side to side for fine tuning.
Zero weld distortion to the bearing housing.
Back off 4 collar plate screws and turn the single rear bolt to tension the chain.

One more pic.

wow alright that is awesome. It is simple but well thought out. You can adjust it and resecure it very well. You can do so much with it but its a very small unit especially like you said if you wanted to turn the clamps inwards if needed. Works great for different size motors and cars.. Thats awesome and yes simple once done but I am sure the thought that went into designing it was the hard part. Now that you look at what RickS came up with your like.. wow so simple and that's awesome. That really shows what a great design this is.

Very cool Glock and RickS for building it and K-fab too.

Thank you Tut for all the kinds words, but all design and build credit goes to RickS. K-Fab machined the bearing carrier for me a while back when i was on a different build plan. The way my rear end is going to be now is different than when I had K-Fab make that dude for me, but I still wanted to re-cycle that carrier and have the K-FAB name on my buggy. RickS has prototyped his new adjustable bearing carrier design on my ST2, but if you go to his build thread (http://www.minibuggy.net/forum/projects-progress/14394-ricks-ar51-assembly-11.html) you can already see that he has incorprated this desgin into his bad ass AR51 (1 seater) and AR52 (2 seater). Looks very slick in his application and I can tell you he is very excited about it. He is working on an options sheet that one can fill out to suit the needs of the individual's buggy. As all of you know RickS does not advertise here on MBN, but if you want to know more about how you can get one for your buggy you can PM RickS. Any length or diameter bear carrier can be used. And because the carrier mounts like a Scope on a rifle you can slide your carrier left or right just enough to align you forward and rear sprockets dead nuts. This is a much easier way to assure proper alignment than that old clamp a stright edge to your front sprocket and line it up that way routine. (Which works perfectly BTW, but this way RickS came up with makes that very easy to execute.) I have hard time with vise grips popping off of my front sprocket when I try to calmp a straight edge to it...but then again I aint real smart.

I'm totally stoked. Gotta work me some OT to pay for all this!!:o

Engineering of my rear semi trailing arm suspension system starts tomorrow. We should have a good picture in about 2 weeks. We think the 930 axles will be near 24 inches. Because of the design of the boots that came with the CV's I am limited to 22 degrees of travel. We will have to see what that looks like once its drawn up in terms of overall travel. Im hoping for 18 inches..but I know I wont get it..

Hey Glock,

What size are your front disk rotors?

Hey Paul,

Not sure exactly. They are the rear rotors from a Suzuki TL1000R Motorcycle. This is the same model bike that my donor engine came from..
http://www.vonhofs.com/TL1000R/TL1000R_8-29-05_12.jpg

Was going to use the same rotors on the rear as well, but they are not large enought to fit over my rear hubs, so Rick S. had to design new ones from scratch..they are pictured above. Here is a picture of the bike where you can see the rear caliper and rear rotor..I will be using 4 rear calipers, one on each wheel. and the new rotor Rick designed will work with these calipers. This way i only have one brake pad part number to buy for replacements...If I own the buggy long enough that they need replacing..

Went to Mr Motorcycle recyling yard yesterday and traded upper and lower TL1000R radiators and fans (which I will never use and only paid 60 bucks for) for the lock set that I needed!! Yeah...

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/GlocknBalls1/c722cc95.jpg

I need to get the rectifier and I will have everything needed to start it, less complete exhaust and battery.

Regulator's going to plug into the a/c output of the engine - the harness that comes out of the case cover opposite the clutch side. Usually three lines come out of the engine. If that plug doesn't fit, then you got the wrong one. Bummer if you did. [smilie=alright.gif]

Then I check the harness just to make sure i wasn't crazy. You know cuz we all know where the charging action actually happens in the case, so naturally the wire hook ups are there...just no matchie.

Here's the plug on the rectifier...
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac287/GlocknBalls1/60640a13.jpg

Pictue I took of the plugs that come from the left side of the engine case did not load
([smilie=gun_chair.g:)

But there are 2 connectors..one has 3 slots, the other has only 1. Needless to say, they do not plug into this rectifier.

Any TL GUYS wanna chime in??

That looks identical to my rectifier... So unless Suzuki changed them, it should fit. Do you have any plugs on the harness with the same pin setup, but a different plug shape?

I guess on my year model engine (I was told it was an 2001) the plugs coming from the charging system area on the left side of engine case are different. i found pix on ebay on new rectifiers for sale and they have the correct connectors for my eng.

Problem will be solved by cutting eng connectors off and crimping on new female portions of the blade style connectors and snapping them into the new white female connector that matches the rectifier. Six to one...ya'll know the rest.

It's all good with respect to my rectifier.

I need a battery, fuel pump tank gasket, some sort of temp exhaust and pending me figuring out how to route the harness around the engine Ill be giving her a start rather attempting a start in the next few weeks. And you bet yer ass i'll shoot video.

Yeah Gene, the guys at Mr. Motorcycle here in Fort Worth were telling me that all rectifiers basically are the same. At least in the Suzuki world. 3 black wires go to stator and usually and black with red stripe is Positive or power and the 5th wire is usually black with white stripe..this is neg. In my case, from engine I have 3 yellow wires and 1 green wire (NEG) and 1 blue wire (POS).

I think were gonna be alright.

I know my build has been slow, but I got a feelin things are gonna start happening.

...to be continued.

Hey Binze,

No I didn't solder the crimps. I did pull test them though. I crimped them pretty well.
I don't even know where I will mount the rectifier yet. I am no worried abou them pulling out. If they get pulled on THAT hard, solder might not matter. Besides solder isn't for structural strength anyways now that I think about it. I guess you solder your crimps?

Lots of debate over solder or not.

I do catch the insulation in the outer crimp though, and just the wire on the inner one.Inner being closer to the spade.Takes the stress off the strands.

Is that Jody Foster on your lighter?

Thanks 8-Ball.

The electrical system is right in regards to the Rectifier. Meaning it is wired properly. Just because there is a solderless joint don't make it wrong. And I had great luck with the cripmers. They worked perfectly, so I don't know what you mean when you say

"I've never had any luck with a crimper like that either though."

I didn't indicate that I had a hard time with the crimpers.

God, I hope it's not Jody Foster.

Technically speaking you should not crimp a connector around the insulation of a wire unless by design (coax cable for example) This type of 'stranded' (if you will) wire is not designed that way. In aircraft wire bundles there are strain reliefs and the back side of the connector to do just what we are all taking about.

Would my repair be better if it had soldered joints? Yes. Of course it would be.

Do I give a shit if this particular connection is soldered? No.

Here's why. When I figured out where I mount the Rectifier I try to meet a few criteria that I have in my mind.

Some of my made up on the spot criteria include the following:

1. Mount Rectifier where it can get some airflow over the coolin fins.
2. Mount it to a steel plate that is directly welded to the chassis.
3. After install, check electrical bonding with multimeter from cooling fins to bare hassis frame. Should have less than 1 ohm for good 'e' bond.
4. Rectifier mount location shall be as such that tall grass, sticks, tree limbs, thorny viens, etc cannot FOD out my wire harness. That is to say harness will be securely installed as to protect wires from being violently jerked for the connector. (The solderless connector).

I feel if I meet the criteria I will be ok. Plus think of all the solder I just saved. [smilie=wink.gif]

Work good last long time!

Well Pickle,

I thought that as well man...

I combed every single connector on the harness and none matched. Even the guys at the MC Recyclers said they'd never seen that kind of connector on a TL before...Perhaps the previous owner of the engine could have done that??? Who knows. It's fixed now. Keep in touch pklracr.

Update:

Finally finished my radiator upper mount. Jeez! I have really been putting that off for a while. Feels good to have it done.

Engine mounts. Have not spoke of my engine mounts in ages. Have had rear upper and lower mounts done for a good long while. But these mounts only pick up the 2 aft mounts on the rear of the engine case. These 2 alone are not nearly enough to hold the TL motor in place. I had Rick S. make me some Steel spacers that are made from round stock; 7/8 OD with an ID to accept 10 MM bolts. (10 MM bolts are factory engine mount bolt size). Ill use these much as Robin did on his engine (and other have done this as well). Spacers will be tied together like Jungle Gym with my 1 5/16" Chassis tube to support front of engine. I have one section in place on the right hand side. There will be 2 sections on either side, so I have one more to install on right and then 2 on the left side. The forward L & R tube will attach to my removeable bar just forward of my engine.
Ill take pix at home tonight and post a few.

So I decided on how to attach the STA's (Semi Trailing Arms). I have fashioned permanent "nerf bars" on the LH and RH side of my ST2's Square tubed base frame. (you have all seen pictures) My STA's will be attached to the aft sides of 2 new 1.5 inch piece of square tubes that extends from the narrowed rear portion of my base frame to the outer aft end of my nerf bars. Symetrical L and R obviously.
I clamped up a 3'X3' piece of sheetrock to the bottom of my buggy frame to doodle on so I could figure out what this set up would look like. These tubes are at a 7 degree cant. I took a picture with my iPhone of the Right side(which is bad quality pictures on the 3GS). you can see the long bar that the STA's will attach to and 3 shorter structural support square tubes going forward and aft. These 3 tubes run paralell with the direction of travel, so with that in mind you can see the 7 degree angle of the tube. As a bonus I think I may consider using this new real esate as a possible location for my battery. I think an Optima would look good right there. Finished product will look sharp. Yeah, it is gonna add a little weight, but I am not really worried about that at this point. Not a race vehicle. I have all the steel tube cut to rough length and I will be wittling them down to exact length and tacking them this week/week end.

Finished installing brand new window unit in my garage side window. It is a cool 70 degrees inside my garage right now. LG is the brand, with remote control. 5 year mfg warranty, plus I bought 2 year replacement plan that begins at the end of the 5 years. So I got 7 years of cool garage minimum. Works for me. (Home Depot) Also picked up new 18 volt cordless drill motor and DeWalt super deluxe bit kit for drivin scews and stuff. Magnetic bit holder, bunch of different phillips and common bits, etc.

Gonna go finish my STA(semi trailing arms) attach bars now...in the cool cool shade.

Man it is so nice to work sweat free...
