View Full Version : Camp Ground Cruiser (buggy)

Wheels
09-20-2010, 09:14 AM
Hey guys... thought i'd share alittle project i'm working on.

I had a small 4 wheeler that didn't run, so i thought i'd use it for parts and build a camp ground cruiser. just something to tool around the camp grounds on.

I consider this to be practice for the full size mini buggy i plan on building. :p

4 wheeler:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/future10.jpg

was going to cut the frame up and build off of it... but, nothing was straight on the frame, so i decided to build a new frame:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/buggy210.jpg

I also bought a 6.5 hp clone engine from Harbor freight that i'm going to use(never could get the 4 wheeler engine to start):

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/buggy410.jpg

and of course, it wouldn't be any fun if i couldn't have long travel: (stock a-arms vs. new a-arms) :p

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/buggy_15.jpg

just finished the whole front end minus the steering:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/shock_12.jpg

and one for size reference: :D

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/shock_10.jpg

that's it for now... thanks for looking.

edit: mod's... if you need to move this into another section, please do.

Wheels, are you going to sit on top of the engine?

Wheels
09-20-2010, 10:22 AM
nut, I haven't finished the top half of the frame yet. when finished, i will be sitting on top of the roof.

I got the idea here: No exactly a SXS... - Yamaha Rhino Forum - Rhino Forums.net (http://www.rhinoforums.net/other-side-side-vehicles/45237-no-exactly-sxs.html) but, i thought i would go ahead and use suspension.

cool project.

are you going to lower the fuel tank & add a fuel pump?

Wheels
09-21-2010, 06:23 AM
thanks proto... yeah, i realized that problem last night when i put the back part on. :D I could keep the gas tank on top of the engine b/c the top will be removable(thanks to two 3/4 inch tube bunges) but i'd really like to put the tank in the back, which will require a pump. i'll have to research pumps now...

Here is a link to a great & informative site for clone motors and parts.
lots of how to help
Affordable Go Karts - Fuel Pump Setup (http://www.affordablegokarts.com/fuel-pump-setup.php)

we run the 6.5 motors on all of our kids race buggies.

We are gravity feed with a remote tank, and no need for the fuel pump for ours

I ended up relocating the exhaust 2 inches lower tonight. tomorrow night will be the air filter relocation. once both are finished, i'll be able to put the top half on. should end up being 2-3 inches lower than i expected. :) good stuff.

nice, sweet looking micro buggy, and I think it'll make a quick little runaround thing, any idea what it'll weigh when your done with it? Can't be much, anyway god luck on with it

Wheels
09-22-2010, 04:02 PM
thanks bug... i'm not sure about the weight, but it's going to be heavy(for this application, anyways). if i had to guess, i'd say maybe between 100 lbs and 150 lbs...

Wheels
09-24-2010, 12:46 PM
small update... had a couple of issues with where the b pillar was going to go(air filter was in the way) and the height of the roof(too high making it look un-proportional)... so...

i took some 1.25 tubing and started cutting it...

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/air_fi10.jpg

then, took some flat bar and traced the gasket and started cutting to fit the 1.25 tubing...

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/air_fi12.jpg

after welding and some grinding:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/air_fi13.jpg

so, the air filter went from this:
http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/buggy_13.jpg

to this:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/air_fi11.jpg

and of course, this made me realize i could go lower with my exhaust than i already have... so, i started chopping it up again too... and ended up with both a lot lower:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/buggy_19.jpg

once that was finished, i started on the upper half tubing(pictured in above pic)... still need to notch the back pieces so it will sit lower and the angles will look right on the front and rear pillars.

view from front:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/buggy_20.jpg

that's it for now..

Bullnerd

Looks like beefy tubing?

Wheels
09-24-2010, 03:54 PM
the 1.25 piece is .120 wall... and most of the 3/4 inch tubing is .120 wall. it's what i had sitting in my shop. i also used alittle 3/4 inch with thinner walls... wanted this thing to be bullet proof. :D

Wheels
09-25-2010, 09:44 PM
got alittle bit more done...

had to think of a way to give more support while sitting on the roof and be able to take the engine out... so, i came up with this:
http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/heims10.jpg

which looks like this together:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/heims210.jpg

which looks like this on the frame:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/heims310.jpg

the open ends on those tubes are for bunges... haven't put them on yet.
once i finished that, I went ahead and welded the top half on(a and b pillars) along with the whole rear section.
so, here is another overall view of the little monster(and of course another beer in the pic for size reference):

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/overal13.jpg

that's it for now.

i'm made some good progress this week... shouldn't be much longer and the little cruiser will be finished.

got the back shock mounted(drilled several holes for different settings... this is at the 'california lean' angle :D ):

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/roller10.jpg

ended up putting it level though.

got the gas tank mounted(glad that cut out is in the tank, made it easy for the air filter):

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/gas_ta11.jpg

got the steering worked out, just need to do the bar holders and bars:

still need to get a bolt for the driveshaft and put the chain on... and of course, finish a couple of things with the frame.

Wheels
10-05-2010, 08:03 AM
well... last night, i picked up a drive shaft bolt after work... put it on along with the chain. and off i went... lol

i realized a couple of things once riding it:
1. i really need to get a bigger rear sprocket, it is way too fast.
2. it turns on a dime... almost threw me off a couple of times. lol

i was like a little kid... couldn't stop laughing. wife even got on it... :D

still some work to do, but i can see the light.

well, it's been awhile since i updated this thread... i haven't actually worked on it in awhile. I decided to go ahead and finish the little beast.

i changed the front steering.. from a flat bar to some pro taper mini's:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/protap10.jpg

i ordered new tires... they are 15 inches instead of the 13inchers that came on the chinese 4wheeler:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/sparet10.jpg

and i also made a spare tire mount:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/sparet11.jpg

This is what is going in the hole of the spare tire:

http://i22.servimg.com/u/f22/11/92/57/85/sparet12.jpg

that's it. only thing left is the pegs and then it off to powdercoat.

lol... dirtreaper, compared to the buggy's you guys are builiding... this would be a walk in the park to build. build her one, i want to watch... :D

Glock, it's almost finished... couple of things left:
1. i have to weld the rockguard mounts to the wheels
2. weld the pegs on
3. still waiting on the sprocket from sprocket specialist
4. mount the brake light and run it to the brake lever
then it will go to the sandblaster and powdercoater. [smilie=ext_beer2.g: once the color is added... i will take a video.

Tut, I've thought about putting a riding lawn mower seat on the top... or using some 2inch thick foam padding i have( I could probably cover it with Vinyl and call it a day).

cap... it's just a Heavy duty go kart clutch that sits on the drive shaft of the motor. and then run the chain from there to the sprocket on the rear swing arm. that's it. and of course, a chain tensioner if you have suspension.

when i get it back to together, i'll take a pic for you.

i think it completes the car too. thanks Gene.

as for Plans, rollers and turn key's... i just wanted a fun little project to build as practice. Not planning on reproducing or selling kits, etc. I will however, help anyone build one... measurements, how-to's, etc. I've already helped one person and his turned out awesome. don't know... maybe I should offer plans or rollers.

Matt, I didn't put headlights b/c i couldn't find anything i liked. I also decided against the brake light b/c i didn't want to cut the spare rim.

Flyinwall, I forgot about the pics riding it... I'll try to take a video with my blackberry and post it up. if not, i'll just post some pics of me riding it.

Krunch, I thought about it... but, it would be painful to sit on. would look damn good though... if i ever build one as an R/C, it will have a roof rack.

Seriously it turned out so awesome. Dang it now I want one! Look what you started.. :D;)

Thinking on this and roof racks and all.. I think I will make a removeable roof rack for my Mini buggy that holds this micro buggy on it.. Paint them to match and load it up on the roof rack and go play.
Then when I get to where I am going after duneing or driving around all day I can unload this little guy and cruise around on it at camp etc... oh ya..

Or ya if you want to bring it up.. If I brake down I have it to ride home on..... LOL... :D

shitty update:

we closed on our house monday, the 18th(in birmingham)... i dropped off the 08 4 seater after closing, along with the campground cruiser. On the 21st, i get a call from my wife while she is dropping off some clothes(we were still in Decatur for the week)... and both vehicles have been stolen.

Please keep an eye for this rhino:

AND, of course... if you see this little guy floating around, please let me know:

Only thing I hate worse than a liar or a racist is a thief. I feel your pain and I empathize with you.

Had an 88 Suburban stolen once. 33X12.50-15 BFG A/T's and Competion Hoyt Alphtec compund bow all gone forever. Got burb back a week later from Dallas PD Impound..(Im in Fort Worth). It was used in a robery-stole a trailer from a guy who did custom trim work. Thousands of dollars of custom router bits gone, plus all the doods tools he make his living with.

That hurt me and the guys who got his trailer stolen. Got Burb back with scabby 31" tires (bald) and 4 different wheels.

[smilie=tr_sorry.gi:

My feeling are hurt more that the Crusier is gone over the Rhino.

Remember it's just stuff. You can get more stuff. Thankfully you were not robbed at gun point(could be dead)...

Hang in there buddy. What goes around comes around.

it irritates me that i work hard for my stuff and also work hard building stuff... and some jackass feels like he can just come into my house and take it. ADT is coming this week... and i've already acquired a springfield xd 40 cal. all that in mind, like glock said... it's just stuff. i'm glad we weren't here while they broke in.

Find out what the law is in Georgia for shooting someone on your property who is stealing, threatening or whatever.

A trail of blood from outside to inside is not supportive of self defense in some places or maybe most.

CARLRIDDLE
07-29-2011, 06:18 AM
In Georgia you can shoot if threatened, or if they are inside home. They dont have to be armed. Shooting in yard probably not a good thing, 1st make them come inside at gunpoint, its too hot to wait outside.

But he's in Alabama could be different.

Wheels

not sure if i'll build another one or not... we are expecting a little one in Jan and i have other projects to finish.

as for shooting someone... here in alabama, you have to feel threatened and they have to be inside your home.... not 100% sure, but it's what the locals say.

i won't shoot anyone unless they are standing in my home unwarranted.

I just moved into a quiet neighborhood a year ago. Less than a mile down the road Rite Aid was robbed at 10am for OXI cotin. And a week later (2 sat ago)my Truck was gone through all paper work on transmision hump along with trailer hitches? Thought mumma did it she said no. thinking may be kid that robbed Rite Aid i called it in and 5 other houses had cars gone through and took stuff mostly money change etc. BUT THE KICKER IS my wifes car didnt look like it was touched then we found out they even stole a bowl of blue berries her father picked for her along with the bowl. Thought i would update this thread instead of starting a new one.

Since the original got stolen, i've been missing it more than I thought. So, i've decided to build another. Figured I would get my fabrication need satisfied before my son is born.

picked up some 3/4 inch .120 wall DOM and also picked up a donor vehicle from the local junkyard.
Finally mounted my bender and started building the new frame. doing it a second time around... didn't take half as long to get to this point:

another view:

Fast forward a couple of days: I finished bending all the pieces for the frame... top and back, anwyways. i clamped it on to give an idea of what it's going to look like.

thanks Martin... just like the first one, i have messed up a couple of places. but, overall... i think it's turning out fine. The mistakes have shown me what not to do when i start my real mini buggy build.

meant to post pics of progress earlier this week... got the top fully welded and put the intrusion bars on. tacked the suspension on. even though i know it would look better with 'long travel' a arms... i kind of like it the way it is. back looks narrow in the pics b/c i haven't changed the tires or put the spacers on to widen it a bit.

first pic is when i was looking at placement for A arms:

thought i'd give a quick update:

got the front tires mounted on the original 4 wheeler rims... slapped them on and went for a test ride today.

a couple of things i noticed:
1. faster than the first campground cruiser i built.
2. a ton more torque(not worried about being able to pull a trailer now).
3. can actually ride wheelies(surprised me when i gave it full throttle... ended up scratching the rear hoop on the pavement)
4. smaller than the first campground cruiser.

anyways, here are some pics:

http://i42.servimg.com/u/f42/11/92/57/85/testin13.jpg

once i break it down, i'll add the light mounting tabs and top. then take it for powdercoat. Once reassembled, time to start on a big buggy. I think i have enough experience with tube bending and welding now... and believe it or not, i've learned a lot that i think willl apply to the big buggy build.

I can tell you dont want to hear this but I would also pay for a set of plans. At least 20 or 30 bucks. Add them to the collection of plans I already have, just like most others in the forums do.
Forgive me since I haven't become a close friend or anything but ummm, think about something please.
Say at about 25 bucks a set, if 200 people which is EASY to do considering most of us would buy these just because of the unique factor and before you know it, 5000 for the next buggy much less the residual sales after the initial sell. I dunno, nothin like a hobby that pays for itself... [smilie=whistle.gif]

This got me thinking i want to build something similar for my son but in the sand rail style so he has a roll cage to sit inside. Hes 18 months old and his power wheels just wont keep up with him. It wont even go in the grass but just spins the tire. He already steers and knows how to turn, stop, and get out and turn it around(since it doesnt have reverse...) I already have a 50cc chinese atv but im not sure about giving him that much power yet... If i did i would have to install a remote cutoff switch so if he got crazy i could kill the power.

Anyways enough ranting. Thanks for inspiring something different though :D

Thats EXACTLY what im thinking. Being as i already have the atv id like to use that but i do have easy(and cheap) access to parts for these things including electric motors etc so i may go that route first and just keep the atv for when he gets older. Also, the electric vehicle would be quieter, slower, and safer for him.

Seriously, you should see him go on the power wheels. (i was looking for a smiley of a buggy going but apparently there isnt one...):D

yeah, i decided to make this one alittle nicer(cvt, electric start)... the motor is the same hp though(6.5). looks bigger b/c the size of this frame is a bit smaller around the engine.

I am planning a camp cruiser. I saw you used centrifugal clutch in your first one. Then the cvt on the second one. So my question is can you get a better hole shot with the cvt? I saw wheelies with the cvt. We're you able to do that with the first build? If you strongly recommend the cvt what brand did you use? Also I assume I can add electric start to any of these 6.5 clone motors. I have a punched up one I got from Jody at Protodie.

hey Duane, make sure to do a build thread... I want to see the progress!! as for the cvt, it is much much much better than the cent clutch. as a matter of fact, it is night and day different. here is the Torque Converter I used...

GTC TC2 1002 Gokart Torque Converter 30 Series (http://gokartsusa.com/GTC-TC2-Gokart-Torque-Converter-30-Series.aspx)

as for adding electric start to your motor... I'm not sure.

Thanks Wheels! Oh yeah there will be a build thread. Collecting parts now. Mulling the options of design. It will be in solid works first then start building. The main idea is a Big Wheel trike look. Low to the ground likely no suspension. Using the rear axle from the Raptor donor.

I can't believe I've never read this thread - and it's three years old.

WOW!!! Man, the first one was cool, then to get everything stolen (thief should be beaten with a large stick), and then the new upgraded one. It's fantastic!

How in the world have I missed this thread?

That thing is cool, very very cool.

if we were not moving in 5 weeks, I would consider building you a frame. But I am focused on finishing the big buggy before we move so time is limited.

true. It would be a ton of fun to build a huge rc like this.

Forgot to update... went to pick up the frame and the powdercoat was messed up. Basically, all of the edges around sharp stuff was showing metal. The powder coaters were dissappointed... and said the powder spreads when in the oven. They offered to redo and i accepted. It was a neon green. I went with another color as to avoid the issue again.

So, it should be ready today or tomorrow.

I got the rims painted and the swingarm... so, it wont be long. Woohoo.

So, I have a couple of small things to do... like finish mounting the top, clean up the wiring and put grips on. on to the goods...
