View Full Version : Hoppa Street Buggy

Has anyone thought of getting one of these? I'd love to have one someday.

It's just a body you put on a VW bug chassis, after it gets shortened.

personally i think they look kinda ugly

they put the sterring wheel on the wrong side :p

Oh gosh, you're right. Ok then, I'm not getting one, they're made in the UK![smilie=sign_duh.gi:

I could quite fancy one of those and the steering wheel looks on the right side to me lol,
beetles are a bit thin on the ground over here now so cutting one up would get you lynched,
I was thinking more of using a sidekick chassis with a lexus motor up front driving either just the back end or keep the four wheel drive ?
anyway I am off to have a look round the orange one shortly to try and decide if it will drop over the front suspension towers,
I realise I need some sort of front grill if I go front engine but a Chrysler pt cruiser bears an uncanny resemblance at the front end
and the front grill looks like it will drop in ok

Need to cut some opening in the front end to not make it look so bulbous. Some horizontal grill bars would look nice in them. Something like the BMW grill inserts only with horizontal bars.

Glass looks like it's molded well.

thought I would start with a Chrysler pt crusier front grill they look a very similar shape

Keep us "posted". This looks like a fun project to watch from beginning to end.

Are you planning to register it for street use?

l will start a build thread once I get going, I have to buy a swb vitara/sidekick after around year 2000 as they switched to a power steering rack as apposed to the agricultural steering box used on the mk 1's also the rear axle is better located with a 5 bar link set up making it much easier to switch to a beefier axle if it needs it,
once I have the vitara stripped I will need to tweak the fiberglass shell to fit on it nicely
yes it will be fully road legal here in the uk, should be fairly rapid with 300 bhp and not much weight

cheers Andy

Much as I hate PT cruisers, that looks like a pretty good match.

Interesting project!

I am still working on the planning bit really, lot of decisions to be made, like do I widen the body so as the strut tops come up in the bonnet ( hood) area or leave it up high as it is and cut out the arches and slide them down the body 3 inches both would work, I favour widening the body 4 inches or so but everything is interlinked like it screws up the windscreen so I have to fins another that is 4 inches wider than the fiat one it is supposed to use,

I have made some moulds of the sides to make up some new sections so I can add the 6" into the length I need to make it the same wheelbase as the sidekick chassis,

l have also acquired a later sidekick to use that has a power rack instead of a agricultural steering box, this has the benefit of a shorter section of chassis infront of the front wheels allowing the body to cover it easier

going to use this engine out of my daily driver

the pics of the clay buck should have been in this post but photobucket is playing up
anyway what I was trying to show was how much closer to the top of the bonnet the wings are on the fiberglass shell than they are on the clay prototype

I might need to slide mine down a bit

It's looking pretty cool!!

04-20-2017, 06:03 PM
I think it looks better with the grill than without, nice job!

me too looks so much better, the bonnet (hood ?) is a pretty close fit to, curvature is spot on just a little too wide, but then I am going to widen the body a few inches so as the front suspension towers come up in the bonnet area rather than through the front wings
