View Full Version : ProtoDie DXT 1000 single seat racer

04-22-2010, 07:36 PM
Ok,,,,,,,,I have not been online as much because of building a new buggy.

Very similar to the last single seat 1000 with reverse.

This model is a DXT 1000 referring to Dirt X Track

This RPM gear box is 3.9:1 ratio ,,,,17T front sprocket & 18T rear with 25" tall tires.
12" ITP wheels

10 weeks ago I started,,,,,,

This car is going to a customer in the country of Qatar, so is shipping out next week I believe.

2 radiators in this one
added a rear spoiler with tail lights in it.
Customer will be racing this on an asphault road course, sand dunes,,,,,and then seeing if he can make it street legal over there.

It has turning signals in the mirrors, and the spoiler,,,horn, reverse, brake lights, head lights,,,,and so forth.

I just tested it on the paved road [smilie=ecstatic.gi:

It was a couple of quick runs then on the trailer before the police were called,,,,you know.

Street tires are DOT approved.

Tomorrow we go to Silver Lake for more pics and video.

screwed up,,,pics will be in the next post

04-22-2010, 08:21 PM
That is dead sexy

04-22-2010, 09:01 PM
Thanks Jay,,,:)
little more info
this one weighs out at 990 lbs. touch more than the last but the 12" wheels and bigger tires are the most of it.

04-22-2010, 09:06 PM

04-22-2010, 09:19 PM
It looks fantastic, well done

04-22-2010, 10:21 PM
does it have a little fan to refrigerate the chain? i thounght about that but i didnt know if it can works... that mini is beautiful

04-23-2010, 01:05 AM
holy cow, that is one sweet looking ride, looks fast just standing still, love the styling on it, top notch all the way around,

Word Proto. Good job.

04-23-2010, 03:32 AM
Nice, It looks so much better with the big tires and wheels.

04-23-2010, 03:39 AM
Wow....Inspirational stuff! I love the look of short wheelbase buggies. They look like heaps of fun even when they're parked. Trying hard to keep mine under 80". Keep up the good work.

04-23-2010, 05:49 AM
Nice, It looks so much better with the big tires and wheels.

What tires by the way?

Nice job, thats a lot of work right there!

04-23-2010, 06:11 AM
Thanks a ton guys,

Yes, that is a small bilge fan to help chain temps.
during testing last fall it would decrease temps by 100 degrees on an old chain.
I have it on a seperate switch & bracket.
The radiator fans are wired in to the bike thermostat

dirt tires,,,,,
Wheels are 12" ITP bead locks Type 7
Tires are Kenda Klaws 25" 9" wide front & 10" wide rear

street tires,,,,,
wheels are 12" ITP SS
Tires are GBC afterburn street force and are DOT approved
25" tall 9 & 10" wide

When I 1st put on the wheels they looked to big to me,,,,,,,,after getting used to them, I like them much better,,,,,,now all the old ones look to small.

Same with the spoiler,,,at 1st I was not sure,,,,but now the old pics look like something is missing without it.

Loading up for Silver lake,,,,,I will have more photos to come

04-23-2010, 06:37 AM
Looks Sweet Jody! It has come a long way since I saw it last, and those street tires are BITCHIN'! Have fun at the dunes.

04-23-2010, 07:45 AM

04-23-2010, 11:59 AM

It's truly a beautiful ride. Looks top notch

04-23-2010, 03:08 PM
Ya Jody this is so nice.. wow clean and like everyone said looks fast sitting still and I know it is too!

04-23-2010, 08:37 PM
Thanks Jay,,,:)
little more info
this one weighs out at 990 lbs. touch more than the last but the 12" wheels and bigger tires are the most of it.

I suspect the added radiator and coolant add up a little but hey ya got to keep it "COOL" Nice Job

04-24-2010, 08:38 AM
Thanks Guys,

Silver Lake was great yesterday,,,not very busy which is what I want for pics & video.

Buggy performed awsome. We had no issues or problems.

They were only 10 min hard core runs,,but the chain stayed nice & cool.
I did not take a temp reading because I could hold my hand on it.

Water temps,,,,,never even kicked the fans on. Hottest it got was 202

I ran both dirt tires & paddles.
Paddles of course had a slightly better hook up, but I find that the dirt tires work great, and are a smoother ride.
I am still pulling the front wheels up with the dirt tires,,,so hook up is still good.

Time to wash ,,,final inspection & give it another coat of wax to get it ready for the boat

here are some Silver lake pics

Just curious,,,,,Is there a better way to upload more than 5 pics per post?

04-24-2010, 08:39 AM
5 more

04-24-2010, 08:41 AM

04-24-2010, 08:43 AM
the final 5

04-24-2010, 09:47 AM
You could use ImageShack® - Online Media Hosting (http://www.imageshack.us), or moderator could give u permissions.

Is that a wheelie ? :D I really like it.

04-24-2010, 07:13 PM
Jody, the new buggy looks really good, great job!

Just curious,,,,,Is there a better way to upload more than 5 pics per post?
Not that I know of. If you set up an external photo hosting site like imageshack or photobucket then you can link to more than 5 pics per post.

04-24-2010, 07:14 PM
Wondered what you were doing, being absent and all. Guess we know now!

It must be wicked on the street! Great looking car. Oozing craftsmanship . .

04-25-2010, 09:14 AM
That is awsome what kind of motor dou you put in it

04-25-2010, 12:34 PM
Nice job!

04-25-2010, 01:11 PM
Looks good

04-25-2010, 03:09 PM
Thanks all.
This has a 2008 Suzuki GSXR 1000 185hp

RPM reverse gear box with 3.9:1 ratio

Gearing feels real good.

A guy at the dunes runs dunetv.com

he shot some video and he put his incar camera on the spoiler for a run.

he is supposed to have it online today,,,so when he does, I will post a video link.
That will be faster than me getting my video done.

04-25-2010, 03:47 PM
it looks really nice. How much did it cost you?

04-25-2010, 05:54 PM
This was built for a customer,,,,,,,26K
3 sets of wheels & tires were about 3K alone

here is the link to the short video made by the guys at DuneTV

04-25-2010, 06:35 PM
hi protodie, I dont know if I m the only one, but I cant see the video....

04-25-2010, 06:57 PM
I was able to see the video.

Dang... that thing is quick :D

Its another really amazing piece of machinery in a long list of beautiful cars Protodie has made. Excellent work! I hope it gets used often over there.

04-26-2010, 06:15 PM
here is another link with no commercials in the beginning.

YouTube - Dune News Sneak Preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjUIbEbIsm8)

very nice people at dunetv.com, they are sending me the raw footage so I can use it for a longer video

Note,,,,,,it is very fast but the video almost looks faster than realtime,,,not sure I guess,,,,cause I was in the car

04-26-2010, 08:27 PM
Thanks for imbedding the video and great it is!

Love seeing the dump-the-clutch start! I'm too chicken to do that and glad to see you do it because I was scared mine would blow up immediately! You're a real pal . . .

Really nice looking car and the video was fun. DunerTV? Guess I better get to Google to see what I'm missing on Dish.

Let's see more of these from Michigan. It's not that we dislike the other cars - these seem like more fun!

04-27-2010, 05:57 AM
Thanks Gene,
Dune TV is a website with just dune videos.
I think he mentioned it is a pretty new site Videos (http://www.dunetv.com)

here is some video we shot

04-27-2010, 07:08 AM
Very nice ride.Dan (RPM) forwarded me the vid yesterday, looks like that buggy realy gets down & hauls ass.Your body pannels look to be first class .Again very cool ride

04-28-2010, 08:43 AM
Dan is real cool.
This is the 1st set of 3.9 gears he made for the RPM box.

I am happy with the ratio's and performance of 3.9:1

04-28-2010, 11:17 AM
Great video. The sound of that machine is unreal!

Do you sell any plans for this buggy? I'm really interested in your rear end design. I like how you use the factory header under the engine and the RPM mount. Great job!

04-29-2010, 07:04 AM

I have been working towards releasing plans for this one,,,,,,,but work load keeps putting that to the back burner.

I still beleive plans will be ready this year.

04-29-2010, 07:26 AM
So do yours or most shifter cars have a gear shift mounted clutch or triple peddle down below. I always wondered if the shifting/clutching was awkward or not?

04-29-2010, 08:28 AM
we have always run a foot clutch,,,just like a car.

Many years ago I drove someones buggy with a hand clutch,,,,,and did not like it

foot clutch feels great,,,and I do not always use it.
Mostly for starting & stopping ,,,,not always for shifting.

With the gear ratios we run,,,there is a wide range in each gear so shifting in minimal.
Most of the time I am running around in 2nd gear

04-29-2010, 11:21 AM
AWESOME [smilie=ecstatic.gi:

04-29-2010, 12:07 PM
What sprocket and tire combo (diameter) are you running? We are always thinking gearing . . .

04-29-2010, 06:13 PM
RPM gear box is 3.9:1

front sprocket is 17T rear is 18T

dirt tires are called out 25" paddles are called out 26"

Both measure a touch smaller..

1st gear,,,,,,,I zip right thru it,,,sometimes even start out in 2nd.

most of the messin around on the video is straight 2nd. On the flat drag strip I hit 3rd,,,,,,but run out of room to keep going.

This buggy gets crated on Monday and ships off to Qatar.

Then comes a 2 seat racer for me:)
Hope to have that done by July

04-29-2010, 10:47 PM
just seems like it pulls and pulls and doesnt wanna stop... hell gets my adrenaline going just watching your video.. cant imagine driving it.

05-04-2010, 06:44 PM
Dang...I think I just ruined another keyboard with an uncontrollable drool excretion!!!

Wow...that's freaking awesome!![smilie=jumping.gif]

Thanks for another dose of motivation....headed for the garage...:D

05-05-2010, 07:55 PM
Thanks Guys,,,,yes it is a blast to drive.
turning & handling feel great,,,,,but it is real nice to have the power.

This went in a crate and on a truck yesterday.

I will be finishing up a 2 seat rolling chassis this week,,,,,then onto my personal 2 seat build.

05-13-2010, 12:34 AM
Freaking nice!!![smilie=ecstatic.gi:

05-21-2010, 10:20 PM
Proto, very nice. What are you using for shocks? Doc

05-22-2010, 07:38 AM
Thanks Guys.

We are using Fox air shox 2.0 ,,,,,10" travel in the rear and 5.5" in the front

Suspension travel is 15 in the front & 14 in the rear

07-07-2010, 07:37 PM
My friend over seas is very happy with his new buggy.

Tearing up the streets & sand with it.

I was concerned about the temps over the in the desert / Middle East / Qatar but it is running good.

I put 2 Honda civic radiators in this one, and the hottest it got on a 100 plus degree day was 217 degrees

he is doing more testing in the heat the next few weeks and will be sending more pics.

07-07-2010, 09:45 PM
Awesome man, I'm in awe, and I just finished a R1 piranha. Your suspension design looks top notch, as does the rest of the buggy. Congrats on the sale to Quatar, I'm sure you will get a contract for many more...

That machine has unreal power, must be a real rush to drive it.

Good luck with your personal 2 seat build, not that you will need it! Thanks for sharing your knowledge here, it's appreciated.

07-08-2010, 09:34 AM
Thanks Paul,

I am sure that R1 pirahna is wicked fast

I need the luck on the 2 seater,,,,,,,,working around the clock to have it done next week:eek:

07-13-2010, 10:37 AM
Next week!!! man you are insane! But awesome.

Nicely done and congrats on the finished... cars. ;) That is awesome that your car sold to Qatar worked out and he is loving it. Very cool.

Can't wait to see more of your buggies and as others have said you inspire the rest of us to do better and do more.

07-13-2010, 12:32 PM
Keep em going someday we will be racing again :)

07-13-2010, 05:22 PM
Hey Jody.... I'd like to see what a set of these 26 x 12 paddles would do on that one....[smilie=shocker.gif] Wanna borrow em' :D

07-15-2010, 07:01 AM
Ya, those look good,,,what is the bolt pattern?

07-15-2010, 07:18 AM
They are 4 on 110...

07-15-2010, 10:14 AM
Perfect,,that is what my hubs are set up for.

Ya if you don't mind,, I would like to try them out sometime, later this year.

07-15-2010, 12:06 PM
I don't mind at all...they're just sitting there right now waiting for me to get working on my mini rail. ;).

I'd head up to Silver Lake tomorrow after work if I had my 4 seat VW powered rail running (busted a rocker shaft last week) :(

07-16-2010, 04:01 PM
Perfect,,that is what my hubs are set up for.

Ya if you don't mind,, I would like to try them out sometime, later this year.

I have a nice new set of Sand Tires Unlimited paddles you can borrow as well

07-18-2010, 05:46 PM

Time to train for the camel races,,,,c'mon,,,faster,,,,faster:)

10-06-2010, 08:46 AM
Reminds me of the vacation movie where they tied the dog to the bumper.... [smilie=rofl.gif]

10-07-2010, 08:03 PM
LOL, there may be a bit of carcass left with this "dog"

Those paddles look so small compared to those scat traks of yours
