I finally got a running donor bike and am starting a build. I have been buying things like a welder, chopsaw, grinders, etc over the past few months and it seems like I may be finally getting somewhere.

Picked up a wrecked 2000 kawasaki ninja zx-7r for 200 bucks. Got it home, figured out all the safety switches and when it fired up I began stripping the bike down. It is now just a frame. I would have taken more pics of the dismantle, but I was all excited and didn't take the time...

Had to buy a new shift rod, stator cover, and ignition switch. Soon I will get a gauge cluster and also need a radiator as it is trashed.

This is a great site and I'm sure I will be needing some advice. This will be a very slow build as $ is always limited (per wife) but I want to do it right....as cheap as possible:D

Got a Stand built for the engine made from free rusty 1" gas pipe. (Fringe Benefits) Also cleaned up my work area and began cutting, fitting and weldin the lower frame. Took me about 4 hours to get from steel yard to fully welded lower frame.

What make of saw is that? how did you find a sliding compound saw that cuts steel?

It is a KOBALT. Bought at Lowe's for under 200 bucks. I bought it several months ago for a home renovation. Its actually made for wood, and I was kinda leary of putting a cutting disc on it, but I'm glad I did. It has the same amperage rating as the Dewalt 12" chop saw, so it cuts great. Plus its a compond saw so it slides forward about 8" and cuts all kinds of angles.

Shop Kobalt 10" 15-Amp Laser Sliding Miter Saw at Lowes.com (http://www.lowes.com/pd_141994-46069-SM2505LW_4294857521_4294937087?productId=3050895&Ns=p_product_quantity_sold|0&pl=1&currentURL=/pl_Miter%2BSaws_4294857521_4294937087_?Ns=p_produc t_quantity_sold|0)

Wow is it an abrasive disc? Dont put a dry cut blade on there man its pretty scary because of the rpm difference, the dry cuts are made for 15-1800 rpm and that saw spins like a demon..lol

If you aren't already...start buying your welding wire in the 10lb spools.... those one pounders don't last no time on a project like this!

Yes it says "abrasive cutting disc max RPM 6100" on the package. I have worn down 2 of them and no problems so far... I wear lots of PPE so not too worried. As long as my honda doesn't get hurt.:D

Yeah I am currently using the 2lb spool of .025 that came with the machine. Its almost gone. I will have to get a 10lb spool tomorrow.

ALL advice and criticism very appreciated. I am not a professional.[smilie=non_banana2:

More pics. Got the upper frame and lower frame put together via the rollbars. Borrowed a Greenlee pipebender from a friend. It doesn't make a very tight bend, but good enough for me. I had to do alot of welding then cutting back off, repositioning, and welding... Ever weld something up, then step back and look at it and it's not straight? Its happened to me before...

Set the frame over my engine to see how it will look. Built the stand at a certain height to accomodate this. I am hoping I can utilize the stand when mounting the engine to save my aching back.

PLEASE someone help me. I am undecided about the rear driveline. I bought a set of front hubs for a saturn ion because i like the 4x100 bolt pattern and have already bought a set of 21x10x8 tires on blaster rear wheels to fit. Now i have decided i don't like the cv axles i will have to use. Below are the pics of the hubs. The saturn Ion/chevy cobalt etc has an offset diff so one cv axle is like 10" longer than the other. The plan was to buy two of the longer ones, then shorten or whatever. Pics of the axle below. Now I am afraid I do not want to use the GM cv axles for obvious reasons.

The deal is I don't want to build my own bearing carriers and all that. Not enough resources. And I know absolutely nothing about VW and Porsche stuff. Can I buy a set of 944 and is there a stub that will fit 33 spline like my GM hubs? Someone PLEASE steer me in the right direction.

i know my s-10 cv's fit a ton of different gm front wheel drive car hubs.. ill count my splines and measure them next time im around my buggy.. then maybe you can use your hubs, and then use s-10 axles. they use a 6bolt flange on the one end.. see picture!

Thanks voodoo. If they are the same spline that would be sweet. Can you measure from the flange to the splines?

my s-10 cv's are 28 spline or 27, counted but cant remember.. i got my wheels drilled out for my s-10 hubs, for 60$ at local machine shop.

what do you have going for your exhaust there.. im in that phase with my new engine install..not quite sure how to bring it up the back like yours.. i see an elbow..but can you post more pics?

My saturn ion hubs are 4/100 bolt pattern, same as my yamaha blaster wheels. You're right they are 27 spline, so s-10 won't work. :(

The elbow is a simple 2" weldXweld 90 degree. I think .188 wall thickness. I just made a straight cut and welded it in. Worked great. Will post close-up pics soon.

Here are pics. I am hoping the exhaust will be out of the way....I think I got a little ahead of myself. If I had it to do over I would have waited until after the rear driveline was done.http://i484.photobucket.com/albums/rr201/robbie-pierce/piranha%20build/piranha099.jpg?t=1274312513

Should be interesting to see what you do about the rear carriage. I think you can make it work, may just have to stretch it out a little further. Not exactly a ton of room back there if you build it the conventional way...

That is what I am shooting for. My carrier will be a little bit wider than in the plans.

My carrier could have been 1 1/2" wider, and then I would have the same track from front to back. The arms and CV's were the correct length, or should i say, properly matched in length.

Are the down tubes going to captivate the exhaust?

Yes. I thought it would look cool, so I Tried my best to center it. BTW sweet ride. I would like to see more pics.
