Hi guys I've finally got around to starting on my AR51 build. I was going to build a Piranha, but after looking at all the mods I'd have to do, and a few emails back and forth with RickS, I decided on an AR51.

I've had the plans for a few months, but I've had to make a table for my 1940s lathe that's getting wired up today and a new belt fitted.

Also bought myself a drill press

For an engine I have a choice between a TLR1000

    Or a GSX1400

I'm leaning towards the TLR, if only for the V twin soundtrack, but the GSX has serious torque and doesn't need to rev like a GSXR to make power.

On the downside the GSX is air/oil cooled so getting enough air in to keep the motor cool might be a problem

I made a seat for the Piranha, that might go into the AR51

And finally, I've made a start on cutting some tube.

It's not a lot, but I should have all the front end tubes cut today- once I get my head around all the inches to mm conversions.

I must say, Rick's plans really are well thought out and easy to decipher and having wjfawb0's and Sodmans threads to follow will make the build easier.

I'm off do do some cutting and drilling and hopefully a bit of welding.

Yeah my vote would be the TL as well.... My brother had one... and well awesome bike to ride... Because of the low end power. And standing behind the bike you get this pulsating in both ears and it will mess with your head, but you'll never forget that moment (Shit sounds like some thing on a Hallmark Christmas card!!)

If you have ever been behind one you'll know what I mean. Any street bike Fan will know what I mean.

I just got my AR51 plans and have started to get my head around them. A quick glance doesn't cut it. i have a few projects to finish and get my shop transitioned from wood before I go get the steel. I'll be following!

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I've got a TLR motored custom bike, so I know and love the sound, but the stump pulling torque of the GSX means I wont write it off as a choice yet.

I spent the afternoon cutting all the front end tube and sorting out the laser cut brackets, so now I've got a kit of parts.

Going to fire up the welder tomorrow and get the sub assemblies tacked up.

As a bonus, it appears this trailer parked behind my place is dumped. It's got rust, but the frame is ~ 3m by 1.8 m, which is just about perfect for dragging a buggy around.

Good luck with the build there Large . There seems to be a few of us putting these AR-51 together . The plans are great and Rick is good with helping you along the way when you run into questions. It's looking like mine will be 6 inches longer than the plan calls for due to my engine choice but Rick thinks it doable. So I'll just plug a way on it when I have time . Keep us all posted on your progress

Thanks sodman. You're right about the plans and as for help, I'm wondering when Rick sleeps. With the time difference, I'm sure he's replying to my emails after midnight his time.

I fired up the tig today and got most of the front tubes tacked up. A couple of times I thought I'd found a mistake in the plans...but it was just me not reading something right. I'm really enjoying this- it's like a big model kit.

Couldn't help myself setting up the tubes to see how they lined up.
