I just located a manual rack & pinion steering unit off of an '88 Hyundai Accel. I paid a whopping $35 for it. If anyone has modified/installed one of these before, can you give me some tips as to how to move forward? I am sure I can figure it out, but if the road has been traveled before I can avoid the pot-holes.
Otherwise, if I am the 1st, I will take pictures as I go and show my progress. Hope everyone has had a productive buggy-week so far. [smilie=closedeyes.gif] |

That is a great link! I had seen it once before, and that is in fact the site where I learned about the Excel rack.
If you look at the pictures on that link, with the rack installed I would think that car would suffer from a lot of bump-steer. Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the pivot points for the steering supposed to be on the same plane as the attachment points for the lower A-arms?? Learning as I go.. |

No, that's a bit of an old wives' (mechanic's?) tale. You'll have to either model your uprights (along with the steering arm rod end centre), A-arms and chassis pivot points in CAD, or draw them all out at half scale to work out where the rack ends need to be. Only then can you chop the rack to make it the required length.

I'd bet for a single a-arm setup (as shown), it's true... the one pictured will have bump steer. The a-arm pivots are nearly touching, yet the rack pivots are over 13" apart. One way to reduce the bump steer, however, is to reduce the suspension travel... and the sidewinder is limited. |
