Fox air shox are hands down the best bang for the buck - especially on a smaller/lighter car. You can pick them up for roughly 200 bucks/shock. Very easy to take apart/rebuild and to valve.

The biggest issue (down side) w/them is having a nitrogen charging setup. It's a small added expense when you start looking at the big picture - get a small bottle, a reg that allows pressure regulation from 0 to about 400 or so psi and the end that allows you to charge the shocks.

For around the same price as the Fox Airs without the nitrogen bottle, you can get Works shocks built to the suspension geometry with a valving guarantee. I would rather have a coil over than an air shock too.

I've had nothing but bad experience with Works. The shocks worked well once they put the right spring rate on, and the threaded pre-load adjust like I ordered but the customer service was horrible.

The initial result of a custom build will only be as good as the information provided. One one custom setup I had them do, the only change I had made was to lower ride height. Ride height is not on their documentation, but rather assumed to be at a percentage of travel. On custom builds I have done since then, I have specified ride height and got shocks that worked great the first time. Since you ended up with a shock that worked well, I don't know what more you want. Every other shock manufacturer will charge you to revalve. Most don't include the springs so it is up to you to buy the first and the replacements if not right.
