Welcome to the site. Nice looking XTC. What will you build next?
Gene,

Thinking about a single seater or 2 seater mini powered by a Yamaha RX1 Snowmobile engine, push button reverse. *Would like to see about 18 - 20" of travel if possible. *Probably back to a trailing arm design in the rear. *This would be my first attempt at building a chassis from scratch, but I think there is enough info and resources out there to use - MiniBuggy.net being one of them for sure. *
That's assuming I can get this one sold first.

Jeep, do you have something showing an rx1 with push button reverse? i have never seen one, as far as i know only the 2 smokes got the electronic reverse deal...

bugpac,

Not quite sure when we'll start the next build - it all depends on if the current car sells sometime soon. *As for the engine combo - you're correct, my mistake on the RX-1 being electronic reverse. *What I should have said was power it by a snowmobile engine, such as the RX-1, pretty hot engine combo, or one with electronic reverse - much like the 2-stroke Rotax or Polaris engines.

My mistake....

Welcome to the site Jeep.

Instead of looking at the RX1, switch to the Apex engine. *It's what Yamaha replaced the RX1 with. *Same powerplant, but comes stock with fuel injection now.

How do you plan on driving the rear end? *Are you going to do a jack shaft setup off the driven clutch?

If you want reverse (and it would appear you do by reading your posts) get an RPM FNR box from Dan Roberto (NOT one of the cheapo copies by that low life snake Sean/Franko/Superkarts! - please see my signature for my opinion of him) with an 8:1 internal ratio. *Works beautifully w/the sled engine.

[url=http://www.yellowdogracing.com/dezrx1install.htm:1jf7vyp1]Here's a link to an RX1 (w/fuel injection) installation[/url:1jf7vyp1] *I'm still working on getting the FI mapping done, but from the small amount of time I have on this particular setup, I'm extremely impressed w/the powerplant. *I've also driven a car with the Apex FI setup - it rips.

K-Fab,

I'll look into the Apex - that's the new Genesis powerplant correct? *Yes, I would probably have to run a jack shaft setup. *I'll be honest when I say I haven't studied up on all the intricate drivetrain parts that will be needed when and if I head down the snowmobile powerplant road. *That was one nice thing with the bike engine, fairly straight forward for a driveline.
Do you have a link I can go to check out the RPM box that you're speaking of?

Also, information on the guys to stay away from, this Superkart company? *Obviously we all want to work with reputable companies...

Thanks,

~JD

Yes, the Apex is the latest Genesis powerplant.

You don't need to run a jack shaft setup if you run the RPM tranny. *The sled driven clutch goes onto the input shaft of the tranny and you then have F, N & R at the flick of a lever.

You can stick with the Yamaha drive clutch and then look into something like a Team for the driven. *Don't use an Arctic Cat driven - great clutch, but they don't survive in the off road world - the towers that hold the cam assembly in place get knocked off after a bit of use and abuse. *(I used to carry two spares with me and considered them "throw away" items.)

Look up the member "Danno" and check his profile - he has the web site link there.

I can take more pix for you too - I have two of the RPM boxes in my possession.

Here's one:

Yes, RUN LIKE HELL from the Superkart group. *There are a couple "Chinese" style buggies running the copied RPM transmissions and they're nothing but junk copies of a quality piece. *If it looks like the transmission you see in the picture above, but does not say RPM, the it's one of Sean's p.o.s. boxes.

Here are a couple pictures of the copy cat box (on the left, with a broken input shaft) next to the genuine article:
Gear side. *Notice that the copy cat box needs a large, thick gasket to seal up? *See all the metal flakes and see how the bearing pulled out of the casting? *Junk I tell you, JUNK!!

Here's the other side - notice how the RPM has been removed from the casting?

Sorry, I'm not meaning to be up on a soap box about this, but I've promised both Dan and Sean that I would do everything I could to protect the person that makes them (Dan) and promote HIS product while I warn others of the scam artist, copy cat (Sean) and his inferior p.o.s.

JeepJD79, someone should point out; if you're looking for a forward-neutral-reverse gearbox to hook up to your sled motor, be sure to avoid the very inferior FNR produced by Sean-The-Sh1thead.

Not only does he copy other peoples' hard-grafted workmanship, but he's also a consummate liar who will always tell you what you want to hear just to pry the dollars out of your hand.

K-Fab,

I don't mind anyone being up on a soapbox, as long as they're speaking the truth... and it looks as if the pictures speak for themselves. *Thanks for the heads up on the Super-Kart guys. *I've seen their stuff before and it doesn't really interest me too much. *

I'm starting to take some notes here and there of all the good things and pieces of information I'm reading. *I like the idea of not having to run a jack shaft and giving myself reverse and a different gear ratio as well. *What's that unit typically cost from RPM? *Knowing a bit more about the motorcycle powered cars, especially busa's I know the JeffCo is the way to go for reverse box that holds up to the HP, but it's a steep price and packs some weight too. *Price you pay for conveniences I suppose.

Appreciate the info!

You should contact Dan for a price directly...let him know your a member here.

I am going with the RPM box and CVT like K-Fab's....awesome set-up. *

The input shaft on the RPM needs a bearing mount for the end of the long shaft correct?
I am just starting to collect info on this drivetrain arrangement, and still deciding on which buggy
design to go with.

The RPM tranny runs about 2300. *Dan has a bunch of different ratios to select from, different drive flanges and different input shaft specs. *He'll pretty much customize to you. *Don't waste your time on the tranny brake setup for the input shaft - it's fine in 600 lb stadium racers, but in anything larger it's just a fire hazard. *You can use it as a parking brake, though.

I have heard the Jeffco is 3500?? *I don't know. *I've seen one in a Coyote - cool unit and appears to be bullet proof. *I've not heard Jay's (guy that builds the Coyote) thoughts on the tranny yet.

You do need to run a bearing support on the end of the shaft. *A lot of people run a tab from the back of the frame to a bearing carrier. *Great setup, but you have to remove the tab to change belts. *I've seen a few use either a push pin or a self retaining pin/clip setup for this type of brace. *I think Jay does this on the Coyote and I know Drakart used to - don't know if they still do or not.

I run the brace in between the two clutches. *Nothing in the way of belt changes (race mentality - keep it simple and quick). *Here are a couple pix.
