How's this for a buggy engine? *It's an original condition spare for a B-17 with 0.8 hrs on it. *Just got done cleaning all the cosmoline off of it and it sure is a cool piece of engineering.

I think you will have some ground clearance issues and maybe will need to make a custom coupler to your new diff. From what I've seen you are the right guy for the job. If not, assign it to a student!

True but at 1450 HP with the superchargers installed it might just be worth it *

There was a smaller 5 cylinder in our welding shop that was donated, but something in the engine was seized up from sitting. I offered to fix it, but someone had decided that a hammer would have been better at loosening it. I came back the next day and two pistons had holes in them. They kept telling me it wasn't worth anything to them. It's amazing what people think after they break something. Would have made an awesome conversation piece if it ran.

Yeah I'd love to build a stand and try to fire this thing up but I may just end up donating it to the Museum of Flight in Seattle as a write off.

Tell us how you came to have that in your possession. There must be a story. I look forward to seeing it at the museum if you don't turn it into a trophy for the trophy room!

Bidadoo.com. *It was an OEM B-17 spare, still with all the original certs and papers from manufacturing. *Also the shop certs for the 0.8 hr run in. *It was sealed in a huge steel casket that is o-ring sealed and under 5 psi N2 pressure. *Each cylinder has a custom made "plug" full of dessicant that is threaded into the spark plug hole. *There are records that it has been opened, checked, the desicant replaced and then resealed each year all the way back to day 1. *The story we got when picking it up was that these engines were used in old military planes that were converted to tankers for forest firefighting for a number of years. *But they don't use those planes anymore so it finally got excessed. *The casket is stamped that it is property of the State of California, Department of Forestry. *We were looking at Bidadoo for some specific Boeing surplus stuff now that they have closed their public surplus store and just ran across it by chance so made a bid. *I like machinery so personally I think it is a real piece of art. *

OK, back to mini-buggies...
