how's that lathe/mill combo workin for ya. I don't have either right now and all the combo units I've seen have been little ones. I'm leaning towards two separate big machines just so I don't have to upgrade later, but that costs some dough. A combo is tempting though just to get me goin. Since I quit my job I have to take everything to the machine shop and that is getting old and expensive.

It works OK for what it is and what it cost. Mine is a Grizzly and they are inexpensive and Grizzly's headquarters are here in town so no shipping costs for me. I was able to get everything I needed done on it to build my two buggies and a bunch of other projects. Even though I now have a full CNC VMC I still use the little Grizzly weekly for misc projects. Over time you get used to how hard you can push it and still get good tolerances. The mill is the weakest link in the combo by far. Since I bought the VMC I have not used the Grizzly mill even once. It is not real stable and is pretty limited in what it can do. You have to take very, very small and careful cuts. I was able to cut 6 spline shafts on it and to cut keyways into my jackshaft but I had to go really slow, especially cutting the splines. For real basic stuff and for not too much money it works ok like I said. If I was just starting out and I had to do it all over again I would probably spend just a few dollars more and get a 9x20 lathe and then look for a used knee mill that I could pick up cheap and rebuild.

Nice work on that buggy. That thing is SWEET!!! I am not a fab guy but after finding this site I think I may get a welder and start to tinker a little bit. Some of you guys should be building machines for general public. After all I believe off road mini buggys and trucks are going to be the future of atvs. Health insurance is getting out of hand and you have a way better chance not getting hurt in a buggy. Anyway have fun on the new ride.
