It's one of the first five or six that came through ATV Racing - 2000 year model, I believe.

Yes K-Fab it is a 2000 model, its the Red and Black one with the dual King shock set up on the rear. There was another one identical that was Red and Yellow, a previous owner of mine had bought both of them.
Wow I cant seem to post pictures but yes this has splined slip type axles out of a Citroen, the next generation in 2001 used bigger Audi axles and CVs and a 597 rotax that apparently had viberating issues. Anyways I was filling the axle tube all the way up with grease, about 10 pumps or more with the grease gun....uh so thats bad..I'm assuming? I want to have fun like in that picture with out this Drak breaking as soon as I land. What year is that one? I'll get degree numbers and see what I got, But I should have more travel...right?...or just smother travel?..compared to other Drakarts...except the Tiger and Tornado, but I want that type of travel eventually. |

They are Audi 5000 on both ends. On the inners, the stub is cut off and a flange welded on. The wheel hubs are different and the splines on the inside of the CVs are different. If you are mainly blowing the inners, they are easier to switch than the outers since it is just a short stub. You could switch the inners first then do the outers with new hubs later.

Hello, sorry not meaning to hijack the thread, but I am having the same problem with the same Drakart axle setup. Mine is a 2000 also with the original axles and shock setup. I blew my first CV this Friday (inner) and I want to upgrade the axles and CV's, but I am not sure how to do this at all. Can I just buy a Porsche 930 CV and use it in place of the one that is gone or will I have to cut and weld stubs like you are suggesting for the Audi's Livewire? The center part of the axle, (plunging part?) seems to have small splines compared to others I have seen pictures of on line and I would like to upgrade them to something beefier as well. Is there some complete car axle I can buy to use this center part and then retro fit the trans and hub stubs/splines onto ? I dont really even know where to being with this, its my first machine with CV axles so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here are some pics of my axle. Last edited by sunblock; 11-01-2009 at 01:20 AM. |

The first thing that needs to be done on the older model Draks is find out where the lower link needs to be moved so that the plunge issue goes away. The lower link only needed to be relocated a very small distance and plunge went from close to 4" down to about .5".
You'll have to limit droop so that the axle doesn't fall below what ever angle the CV can manage - for example, the 930 can handle 25 degrees of deflection, so you'd make the suspension allow for no more droop than that. Modify the cups (probably cut/weld) so the CV of choice fits. It's never "that easy" unfortunately. ![]()

Thanks Kfab, that makes a lot of sense. I am not sure I am following your advice on the lower link though, is this some part of the outer CV ? I have seen a mod to move the rear shocks back slightly and lengthen the trailing arm so the axle is straighter, sounds a bit like what you are suggesting ?

The lower link I'm talking about would be the tie rod that goes from the chassis, back near the transmission on out to the suspension.
I can't recall which way Jay moved the mounting tab on the frame, but all he did was rotate it a bit. Totally changed the plunge. You might consider giving Jay a call. You can reach him at Desert Dog Off Road Tuesday through Saturday. It made a huge difference.

Thanks, I think I understand now.
Anyone know the best source for Citroen 2CV axle parts ? I might as well pick up some CV's but I cant seem to find them anywhere. |
