When I had the Rabbit tranny I was contemplating using like that (It only allowed type 1 cv's as rabbits are small and not a lot of wheel travel) I was looking at making a adaptor that bolted right to the bellhousing and would deal with the side loads a chain would pull. Then to connect to the power shaft just using the stock clutchs center part as it still had the springs in it to help take some shock (but they may be to stiff for a lightweight car VS the larger car they came in?) But perhaps softer springs could be used. But a simple Sprocket to the clutch plate adaptor would be not to bad to fabricate. This may make the tranny larger with the bellhousing but some of these imports are not that large.
I have not gotten to a Junk yard yet but may be able to yet this week to see if the newer VW trannies will allow a larger CV (The rabbit trannies CV location placed the diff to close to the tranny to go bigger) I heard Jetta were bigger and the new ones may be a whole new ball game. I only looked at VW as they already had German CV flanges so that save some trouble but if you cannot get large enough CV's then its a moot point I suppose. Looking at that Pic of Arrowheads rear end shows a large opening right above the tranny. (Shows possibilty for rearward bias of motor if deseired) If a frame was built wider a Sled motor could sit right above it and the pipes would have more room to be fit in. Then instead of the higher gears he runs with his setup (3rd and 4th I beleive he claimed were normal) the lower ones may be better for a CVT setup sled motor (even if a chain was fed off the Sleds driven Jackshaft to the trannies input) Somewhat off topic but still good for da sled guys. His tranny does allow some serious CVs to be added. Bill

The Honda powerplant seems to be a good one. As noted Shifter runs one and it's sweet. He's managed to keep it very quite, but not hurt the performance of the beast. You might try hitting him up with a PM and see what he has to say. CV and Axle tutorial
