Default David's trailing arm rear end conversion

Well I got two seasons out of my motor on the swing arm rear end, but now it's time for something better. The swing arm worked well in sand pits, but on rough trails it was really bad! So I'm going to convert my rear end to a trailing arm over the next few months.

I picked up a set of VW CV axles as well at two stub axles that I will have customized. I'll be making a few parts in order to hold the bearings as well as connect the axle to the live axle. I'll be sticking with 1" keyed stub axles as well as a 1" keyed live axle. I only have a 250 cc motor so I feel the 1/4 keys will be good enough with the 1" axle. For shocks, I'll probably use some ATV shocks that I pick up off eBay. I'd like to get Fox 2.0 air shocks, but they are a bit out of my price range.

Here is a rough sketch and a few diagrams I cooked up in Google Sketchup. All comments are welcome as well as any advise. I'm sure I'll have many questions along the way.

Rough sketch of what I'll be making.

Bearing block. Will hold two 1" bearings.

Mount plate for the bearing block.

Adapter to connect CV to live axle.

VW axles I bought.

Here's my 2 cents tried 1 inch shaft .25 keyways on my buggy two runs out no more than 50 miles keys twisted a shafts worn didn't work for me find a spinded shaft remove any doubt of a let down. My engine rates at around 34 HP I used 540 RPM shafts that I got from the John Deere dealer for a 12" long shaft 6 spline around 80 bucks
hey worked for me . Good luck on rear rebuild

I know... I'd like to use spline shafts, but I haven't been able to find what I need at a reasonable cost. Maybe I'll try ebay or something.

On the outboard end, I have a set of 944 stub axles. They fit a type IV bolt pattern - which may be the same as some of the others?

If you're interested, let me know. You can have them.

Nothing yet. I'm building an Edge Trax 2 for my wife right now. Once that's done I'll get back to this project.

Daaboots, have you thought about putting some suspension in the trax 2, something like the triple E uses?
