Likely the different versions have different setups, I have seen many with MAF's as far as what is needed to tune the stock computer, basically, a pair of wire cutters and a laptop with HP tuners or the like to program it. Just read up on how the tuning software works and you will be fine, don't mess with any of the power production stuff, just delete the sensor check engine codes for the things you will be deleting, you will understand when you get into it. HP tuners has a great website with lots of help and a good forum to ask questions and get answers.

OK this is getting somewhat muddy. I'm no expert, but i'm going to try and clear up a few mis-conceptions.

There is a 2.2L and a 2.4L offered from 97-05 as one generation of Ecotec. Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and Saturn offered a version in something they made during this time.
The next generation of Ecotec started in 04 for Saturn, 05 for Chevy. There is some overlap of both models creating some confusion. It included the 2.0L with a Supercharger and VVT for the 2.4L. The 2.2L was carried over as well.
The biggest/most important change to anyone using them for something other than factory replacement is the computer.
There is NO HPTuners support for the modern 2.2L only for the 97-05 like what came out in the Cavalier.
There is HPTuner support for the Saturn. Same years/models as chevy for the most part, see above.
Here is a brief listing, not my list, of the computers and what they came out of:

Notes:
"PCM" Powertrain controller, which can operate an engine and transmission. Computer starts with a "P"
"ECM" Engine controller only. Computer starts with an "E"
"TCM" Transmission controller. Only in vehicles with an automatic transmission. The device is a slave to the ECM. In manual transmission car, the TCM is not installed.

L61=2.2L
LSJ=2.0L Supercharged
LE5=2.4L
LNF=2.0L Turbocharged

J-bodies:
2002-2005 L61 equipped cars:
PCM: P11

Deltas:
2003-2006 L61 Ions
2005-2006 L61 Cobalts
ECM: E16A
TCM: T42

2007-current model L61 Cobalts, Ions, G5's
ECM: E37
TCM: T42

2004-2006 model LSJ Ions
2005-2007 model LSJ Cobalts
PCM: P12
Note: The P12 unit could in fact operate a transmission in this application. It is simply not used. However, somebody using HP Tuners on this computer will find variables for it on the 2005-06 cars. In 2007, they removed those variables.

2006-current model LE5 Cobalt, G5's
ECM: E67
TCM: T42

2006-current model LE5 Sky, Solstice
ECM: E67
TCM: ? (5L40E trans)

LNF Cars:
Sky Redline
ECM: E69

Hope this helps......

How close are the Ecotecs to the modular motors? I swear the 2.9 in My girlfriends Colorado is a bigger version of an Ecotec.

I would not recomend using one of the newer drive by wire ecotec engines. It's much easier to use one of the older cable throttle units. The drive by wire is electronic throttle control that needs a specific pedal or a conversion which just means more work and parts tracking. The cable units are much easier to adapt for our purposes. I am not sure when they switched though. Probably around 04-05 I think. I don't feel like lookin that up right now. Just a thought though.

I did...........well something along these lines, just not as detailed. The drive by wire..... Unfortunatly more and more vehicles are using it. It can be changed out for an earlier GM throttle body or the more simple thing to do is modify the factory throttle "switch" to work with a new set-up.

whiplash.....You sir are exactly right. Like I said there is no HPTuner support for the modern 2.2L
I'm in no way bashing HPT. It's actually one of the better programs out there for tuning........

That's a great link standfast. I didn't realise GM renamed the engine model when it was moded as a flex fuel.
