Default engine mounting

i made the motor mounts and had everything measured and line up perfectly.. atleast i thought.. i welded my mounts on went to to bolt it up and some of the holes dont line up.. *so i thought it was the mounts were just crooked.. *some of them did line up, but when looking at the eninge.. it almost seems like its cocked to one way about 1/8th inch or so.. * will this affect the chain, or anything? *thanks *-Matt

Ah - weld pull got ya.

You may need to cut a few loose and re-do them. *You really need to make the engine as aligned as possible. *1/8" is enough to cause problems.

When you TACK the mounts back in, do it with the engine in place, tack on two or three points of each mount, remove the engine and then go back and finish welding up the mounts.

When welding something that might draw,do like K-fab says and tack on 3or4 sides, then weld from a corner toward the middle,do all sides like that. Then check alignment and if ok and you want a pretty weld then put a 2nd pass all way around, taking care to be even and pretty. *My teacher always said"you can fix ugly, but you can't do nothing about stupid".He yelled a lot also.

Ditto the above welding technique.

Nothing short of perfect alignment will do if you don't want chain troubles. If you drop one of the engine side cases, you can use a large set square on your table across the face of the engine cases to get the engine perfectly vertical. Then prop a long straight edge up against the engine case and either sight down the straight edge to a longitudinal line on the table that's parallel to the chassis centre line, or use the set square and a rule to measure in from the edge of the table.
