Alright here i go.
Im looking to get into my first mini rail. I picked up a 1990 gsxr 1100 motor for $200.00. (is this a decent motor?) The wiring harness looks like a bunch of knots... A few questions. Id like to buy a knock down 2 seat frame that has the engine mount with it. Anyone know where I can find such a thing?I have some fab skills and I can MIG weld. Also I hate wiring, What options do I have for a quick fix? Thanks in advance! |

That engien should be good. I believe it is air cooled, or am I wrong? If it is air, make sure it is not blocked. As fort he wiring, get a diagram, or send it off. I think there is a company who will do it for 150. I wouldn't suggest a knock down. They all need notching. It would be a lot cheaper to buy plans. I had a friend who had a bender which I used on my frame. The whole thing with plans cost 250 or so. If you have a good wiring diagram, I, or another member may be able to do most of the wiring for you.

Welcome to the site! Are you in Hoosierville? (My parents are from Rossville)
Girard makes a nice knock down frame for a good price. Rorty makes terrific plans that will get the entire car built. In any case, my real comment is about suspension design and that is where you should get edumacated. Before you buy anything please read up on this site and others of course, about caster, camber, kingpin inclination, shock inclination and mounting and stuff like that. You could build a car and be very unhappy with how it drives or you could do the opposite. I recommend the latter. |

Welcome hoosierdaddy.
Yes, the 1990 GSXR11 is a toaster and not a kettle like the later ones. You need to watch the oil temp on these motors when you stick them in a buggy. They're not called toasters because they brown bread! A good sized oil cooler with a thermostat should see it reliable and it will have gobs of power. |

I'm sure the Shorts are super nice people.
Before you buy or biuld be sure to bone up on suspension geometry. If you decide to buy a complete car be sure to ask about kingpin inclination, droop, bump and all the rest. That is a big difference between many cars and the effect on handling is significant. I thought you might be a Hoosier - ya' never know! |
