hey guys i haven't talked to guys forever. well the old frame i was building ended up being junked. it a was a fun learning experience was i think ill just buy the kit next time. hehe. anyways im starting over. my uncle has a 1971 honda cb 750cc four and it has 14000 miles on it. and it has just sat there for 20 years in the garage. everything is there and the motor is in great shape. its a cruiser bike. he says for the motor to run it just needs carbs rebuilt. probably cuz it has sat and its so dry. but he parked it because the starter was making a funny noise. he wants 500 bucks for the whole bike and its 100% complete.
so what do you think. should i buy it? |

That is the bike that started my mini rail fantasy! In 1971 I was a high school junior and that bike was awesome.
I knew someone who built a solid axle mini back then with a Honda 350 or 450. We took it to Glamis. Geared wrong, threw the chain - typical teen experiment. Never stopped thinking about what could have been. I was 16 and was dreaming of U-joint and chain drive. My ideas were several decades too soon. IF you could get the air flow over the engine then it would probably work. I see major cooling issues though. Maybe you should buy and part the bike and then buy a water cooled, fuel injected GSXR 750 or 1000. That's my take. Gene |

If it has actually sat for 20 years it is going to have more problems than needing carbs rebuilt......maybe froze up, stuck rings, rust in the cylinders..if it has been siting for 20 years see if he will let you tear it down a little before you give him money for it. see if you can turn the engine...make sur the plugs are out of it and see what it sounds like when you turn the engine.......just use some common sense to look for things you might expect after 20 years.

$500 bucks can buy a decent motor if you look around. I've seen newer 750's sell for that when people wreak their sh*t and don't have insurance. I just got an '01 929 from a buddy for free basically. It needed a case and a weld job on the motor where the case attaches, an ignition and an ecu. I have less than $500 in it I think....
