Default 1397 Big Bore Kit

I currently have a two seat Short Sand car. During a recent trip to Armagosa I started to feel slippage in 1st & 2nd gear. Since I have to pull the motor I figure that I will upgrade to a 1397 Big bore. Do I need to do any specific tuning once the engine is slapped back together? Will the stock injectors still function or do I need to go larger? Will it require reflashing? What kind of horsepower / torque gain can I expect? Since I am going to have the engine opened up should I throw in a hi-volume oil pump? Car is currently configured with 4:85 gearing Extreme Sand Squirt 1300 Comp Cut paddles and custom header exhaust. Pretty much stock. Any info / suggestions will really be appreciated.

Mike

This is your opportunity to back cut the transmission, install a larger diamerer output shaft, install a case saver, install all new seals including the clutch shaft. You can also do a performance cam installation if you want and it is better if you don't go with the intake to exhaust swap.

Stock injectors will still work. A Wego or Power Commander along with an 02 sensor in the exhaust will allow you to tune the engine using a laptop.

My 1397 with all the mods includng the "don't do" intake cam swap makes 179 horsepower and 101 Ft Pounds to the ground through a horspower robbing differential. According to the numbers it makes about 205 before the loss.

It sounds different and has more grunt. Highly recommended.

If you use a 2008 crank you can get more displacment. Look into that.

Welcome!

If its just slipping all you'll need to do is replaced the clutch which you should be able to do while the motors still in the rail and you'll only need to drain the oil and remove the clutch cover. If its popping or snapping while in 2nd gear then you'll definatly need to pull the motor, split the case and get the gears back cut.

Am I wrong or should it not slip in the higher gears first as they are tougher on the clutch? Am I missing something??

Toms right about that... like Gene said it time to back cut the gears!

Should not slip at all. You should be able to let the clutch out without throttle (in camp) and have it hook up. In the sand it should not slip at all in any gear.

Seems to me if it's going to slip it will do it in any gear but maybe is more noticable in 1st and 2nd.

The higher the gear the harder it is for the motor to pull and its harder on the clutch too. Every clutch I have ever seen always started slipping in HIGHER gears first due to this then if not fixed got worse till it would not pull higher gears due to slipping and lower gears had to be used just to get it to move.

I am also not sure about the not slipping in sand at all. I woudl say it depends on the tires. Some paddles hook up mean.

I know for a fact we have had Banshee clutches slip in the sand.

I agree it should not slip at all unless the driver presses the clutch a tad to make it do so. Not recommended but still done all the time.
