I can only assume that someone out there in the wonderful world of Minibuggy.net has at some point or knows of someone who has mounted a ZZR1100 motor into the standard Piranha rear end.
I was having a quick look at my motor the other day and it seems way to big to even come close to fitting, the biggest thing that stood out to me was the way the sump came down so far. So please does anyone have any tips or pictures on how they have mounted theirs and or a friends ZZR1100 motor. Thanks in advance ![]() |

Hey hows things.. Glad to hear that someone else is going down the same route as myself. ive mounted a 96 zzr1100 d model engine into a standard edge designed piranha.. but ive had to lengthen the rear housing an extra 100mm away from the cockpit and add 100mm onto the cockpit.. its a fair lump of an engine but should do the job, hope to have it up and running in the next 2 to three weeks ,, il post some pics later when i get time.. are you using the double a arm rear axle? ,, how are you planning to sort out the airbox setup? are you using the standard jets and carb setup?

What is the main reasoning for the additional length away from the cockpit? was it to provide more clearance for the exhaust or something else?
At this stage I am using the single A arm suspension, I haven't even looked at the air box, jetting or carb set up as yet, I'm more worried about the mounting of the motor specifically because one of the major things that concerns me is that the motor has (in my terms) a substantial appendage underneath it which makes me think I have to mount the motor quite high which then seems to throw everything else (ie drive chain) into very obscure positions, now to me that just doesn't seem right and I know for sure I dont want this appendage to be below the chassis, I might as well have a great big F****n sign on it thats says "hit me" if I was to do that. Not very effective as far as I'm concerned. Whats everyone else's thoughts, surely someone has overcome this problem in the past? |

With the Pirahnas narrow rear end a casset type thing like shown can help cure your taller motor mounting maybe and add easy to add electric reverse?
No reason the center chain might not be doubled or enclosed and oil bathed either. The pic of the buggy is just to show the stater monted atop it. You can see the mounting bolts in other pics of it.

I really do not have a schedule. Sometime I crash by 1:00 am and sometimes I find myself up till 6:00 am.
Other days I am getting up at 6:00 am. My internal clock is not on earths time I guess. That said the sand man is beating the hell out of me this night. Laterz

The main reason i added length to the cockpit was to accomodate both my height (6'2") and the header pipes of the zzr.. also using the standard edge designed axle the zzr1100 engine i am using is slightly offset to the right. also the sump does sit down below the chassis in my build.(80~100mm) after much planning i decided that it would be the best option to keep the center of gravity low.. rather than cutting the oil pan, as its fairly specific for the zzr.. i plan on making a sump guard once i get it rolling.. with the setup im using i could afford to have the engine a bit higher by about 50mm .. by the way try nd get hold of the engine subframe thats mounted below the exhaust ports -vhandy way to mount the front end of the motor
I would suggest building the double a arm suspension from the go . and mounting a sort of cush drive system on the main sprocket.. theres meant to be alot of horses out of this motor. once i get my buggy going i plan to cut up a new rear axle with cvs hope this helps will get pics of my build up later 2 nite |

Myself I would not worry about cutting an oil pan just to lower the center of gravity unless it was a smooth track racer. Off road there are tooooooooo many variables to risk this for it IMO.
To many things to go wrong and good things lost for a couple pounds down lower thats easyier to get in other ways and unless the skid plate beneath the engine is 3/8 thick or better a buggies weight at speed against a rock will bend it. Potentially cracking the oils pan. Walking back sucks. Might come back to no buggy to if it gets stolen or stripped. (I have seen it done (the aftermath)). Raise the motor till it clears and make the engine bay big enough. If thats not your idea of fun talk to the frame designer about what motor the frame was originally built around and find one of those engines. Thats my take on it.
