Default motor recommendation for buggy/UTV project

I just introduced myself in the newbie section. I was hoping to get your thoughts on a project I want to start.

I want to build a mini trail buggy for my nephew and myself. The buggy will be for just for riding the trails, some small hill climbing, maybe some small mud bogs and creek crossings as well. I could just go buy a Polaris RZR but what fun is that !, besides, there are some things I don't like about it dimensionally as well.

What would you guys recommend for a motor ?. I would like to do 4 wheel drive and keep the size of this thing to something slightly larger than a UTV. I'm thinking something with more torque than speed, but a little speed might be nice.

Thanks,
Ed

Welcome to the site.

If you're thinking about a Razor, then consider using a Can-Am 800 for the basis of the machine. You'll be able to get a full suspension, drive train and such out of it. The 800 has great power, a CVT setup (so you don't have to shift, just stab the throttle and go) and EFI.

I've been in one Rhino that is powered w/the 800 - it rips. I also have a lot of seat time in a four seat machine (C4, is what it's called) similar to the Razor/Rhino, but is about 25% larger and the C4 rips. It's a total blast.

I would ahve to agree on the Can Am stuff. I see these machines in the dunes and they are IMPRESSIVE to say the least for ride and power. They will flat haul (even the pure utility ones) if the rider asks. Every single one will either need to slam on the brakes at the top of the big hill or if they are putzing up and start to spinf a mere half throttle push (I have asked) makes them accelerate briskly while spinng all four tires. If I ever buy another quad, I will look at these machines before anything.

Thats just from watching them. Talking to the owners they have often owned others and they cannot say enough about how much better the Can-ams are than there "other brand" last machines. In both ride and power and ergonomics and quality and on and on.

I have yet to meet one (in talking with over 50 people who have them) who did not like or love it.
