Default Fixing some Buggy stuff

Ok couple things I am working on.
First fixing the race car.

She needs a few new parts.
seems racing wears out and brakes things rather quickly...
ok the first race was 400 miles all off road
and the last race was 200 miles all at nigt...
again braking things.....

So I guess 600 miles all in the offroad desert is a lot
so I cant complain I am doing good actually everything
has been small things.

Like my stock oil cooler built onto the motor tore open and is
leaking so it looks like I am going to just remove it.
I have a full flow oil with large hp1 filter and duel pass
oil cooler with thermostat controled fan so I dont think I need
the stock cooler, right?

I need a new fan shroud and I am having tons of trouble mounting
and making a good throttle bracket.
It seems I cant get wide open.
It appears I have only ben getting 3/4 throttle.
Who new?

I switched a bunch of tires and will be going back to my
33 inch Micky Thompson tires.
Less flats and way less bent rims.

I fixed the front.
Re valved front shocks softer on compression, lowered the
pre load on the coil springs and added gussets to the shock tabs.
Its all good and back on the car.
The 33" tires are on and what not
Here is where I stand on the car.

Need to buy one rim to mount my last tire and thats it
for tires and parts.
Need some small things, like fuel line, oil line etc.

But other wise not bad, not a lot to buy this time
mostly stuff to fix.

Checked the entire car for cracks or broken tubes, welds etc.
All is looking good, had to change a couple stripped bolts.

Re greased the car and what not so all is really good.
I have to say I am going into this next race really prepped
and set to race.

Now its just up to how well my compatiton does the same.
As most of them broke the first lap a lot of their cars are
still prepped and ready to go.

I have been taking time to add stuff to the car to help out.
Like padding the bars inside the car that we could touch etc
with padding etc to make the car softer.
Foot rests for my passanger with padding etc.
You know adding some features to upgrade the racing comfort
of the car.... we are inside it for awhile why not be comfortable.

Like Installing the new larger Air Breather system for Pep and I
so we dont have to open are helmets we hope anymore.

And on a side note I had side panels built for the Sand car.
They are all done and even received them back from
powder coat.

Just need to mount them on the car and the sand car is now
all ready for the Dunes... oh and bleed the brakes.
*dont ask.

Well it was a good weekend of working in the garage, with nice
weather and good times.
My brother and his friend stopped by and we hung out and worked
on little projects and I welded mostly.

Anyways I will keep posting of the changes I make to the race car
and get a post of the panels on the Sand car when I get a chance.

Thanks for reading.

stock oil cooler sux anyhow, blocks the air to one cylinder, good to 86 that....the center mount fan shrouds do a far superior job to equal cooling....its been a while vw is still evoliving with new parts...

I am going to run the new fan No Cooler so I will not have any
heat from the oil cooler getting onto my engine at all just
nice fresh... well hot desert air.... anyways the oil cooler
is up ontop of the fuel cell away from the motor.

So no hot air coming off the oil cooler onto the motor should
make it cooler.
Fan blowing only onto the cylinders should make it cooler.

So Ya I had the stock one in there so I left it.
But now that its leaking its gone.
Stock is not the best in racing and the full flow and new
duel pass cooler will handle anything I should throw at it.

Thanks for the input.

Oh and at work the past couple weeks I have been building
this car.

I have built the entire car so far by myself.
Yep everything you see here I have done.

We normally break the job into tasks but we all have been
really busy so we are all pretty much taking on entire cars
until others can get done and help.

This shot shows the front end I am currently working on.
It will be a Big car.... LS 2, Albins Tranny 4 Big Seats etc.

Here.

Its funny but true, a lot of people would love to get paid to build cars.
So ya that is cool.

I guess the only thing better would be to own my own company
doing the same thing for myself not for someone else.

But I could never have a million dollar co.
Like the one I work for.

But thank you.
And heck then if I owned my own company I would probably not
get to race and work on my own stuff.
Not to mention hang out with my family at work with Buggies and
shows etc.

Ok sure my job, life is pretty cool.

Thanks Rorty.

Hey Gene posted at the same time.

Ya the sand car is my other vw two seater.
Its small but not a mini.

I build big cars at work so at home with my own stuff
I like to keep things smaller.

I will get some new posts of the Sand Car soon when the panels
and what not are fully done.

As for work ya we do some crazy stuff but our boss has
put some crazy money into it.
So we have some really great equipment and tools.

As for our cars everything is mounted at angles and what not.
Really not easy cars to build or copy.
We have our own unique look and style.
Our cars do very very well and ride awesome.
But they are BIG.

They are not really my thing, although the smaller cars
we build once in awhile I do like a lot we just done build
to many of them.

I really like this car from my work.

its smaller tubeing etc.
And I enjoyed assembleing it.
Nice car.

Anyways thanks guys.

Well I hope to prep a lot for the next race and change a few
things.
I hope for the better.
Again its trial and error so it may help or hurt.
So not all my bugs will be worked out this year but once
I make all my changes then I hope I wount have any to do
next year and will be ready to race seriously.

Thanks.

Hey Tut,my buddy races a drakart Tornado and does very well.(i also race against him in the honda pilot class). He says that the steering sucks that when he hits some ruff stuff on the track it wants to rip the steering wheel out of his hands.I just wanted to see what option does he have as far as a rack and pinion goes?I know he can do a power steering kit some how but is there a different type of steering that you guys use in the dezert racing?I could only imagine the ruff stuff that you guys drive through? Thanks,,,,

We use racks just very big ones with large gears absorb more
impact.
A steering stabalizer could help a lot of he is not already using one.
Smaller parts just seem to be rougher at passing everything you
feel through them easier.

Not really sure on a pilot whats available but
on my car I switched to a very large rack and
I grease it good and it works well.

Oh also I went to a larger steering wheel seems funny but
it helps too.

Good luck and keep on racing.
