Sand LIKES wheel speed. If its geared to low it will not climb much in the sand.
Although I have seen some creep around in sand. Genrally the ability to spin the tires faster helps.

Hello. 5 forward gears in the 'transfer' case (VW transaxle) TIMES 6 forward gears in the Suzuki trans gives the below ratios from low low to high high; you have a gear for anything, anywhere, anytime. High high = 127 mph at redline, that oughta plane on top the sand I think.
143.60 to 1 102.88 to 1 90.02 to 1 80.80 ...etc 66.09 64.49 58.50 53.86 50.65 49.06 41.43 36.67 35.15 33.77 29.17 27.60 22.58 20.90 20.24 19.98 18.40 16.41 14.50 13.43 11.88 11.39 10.94 9.32 8.25 7.59 |

I was just saying. I have seen multiple trannies linked before and know what all the ratios can be BUT if the motor does not have the snort to pull those higher gears they will be non useable.
Something that runs good on hardpack will loose a LOT of its edge in the sand. Sand is a drag no matter what tires you have VS hardpack.

I have been going to sand my entire life and have learned it is soft! It takes tons of power to get up the same hills on dirt you just take for granted. Man is it soft.
For example I race on hard pack with a VW motor. I take that same motor to sand and it is just not enough I can not reach any of the speeds I hit on hard pack or climb up the big hills. So I now have the exact same motor but I put on a T-3 turbo at 6 pounds boost nothing crazy still using as much compression as I can and not trying to use the turbo for to much just that extra get up a hill type power. Kind of like 2 strokes power band type of deal is what I use it for. Just added a turbo and changed my cam and it works great for sand and now I seriously love it. So anyways that is a big difference for the soft sand I play in that I need a turbo to do the same stuff in sand. Little off topic. Just throwing that out there. ![]() Well sounds like an amazing rig and I look forward to seeing it. I love Chris's Rock Racer so cool. Well done.. ya hes broken some stuff but that is R and D and testing for him. So cool. I have not seen his second one. He actually brought his rig and everything out to a desert race and showed it. Well like others said the right gearing and the right motor power and you will find the right speed you will run in sand. Sounds like you have plenty of choices to get you just right. I can not believe all the work and features you are adding into it.. wow! ![]() I am excited to see more of this project in time. Thanks for sharing and post when you get some pics. ![]() |
