Polaris 800 making 140?

ROFLMAO!!!! Yea right!

The P.O.S. Polaris I had made, on a good day, 90.

The 800 twin an a Tazcar SUCKS. I can't stress it enough.

Go with the Apex. Trust me here.

I've been in 600 twin, 800 twin, 700 triple, 800 triple, 900 triple, 1000 triple, 1600 VTEC Honda (bone stock, well built -250ish hp and supercharged 300+), and 2.2 Ecotec powered Tazcars and the Apex engine is THE way to go for the older design chassis Tazcar.

For that matter, I've been in 600 & 800 twin, Busa, turbo RX1 (non injected Apex) and Apex powered Coyotes and the Apex is by far the most fun and has the best (useable) power output. The turbo RX1 powered Coyote was the quickest machine I've ever ridden in, but overall, I'd take the Apex over any of the other power plants.

maybe your polaris was a p.o.s. but yes, they make 140 h.p. When the 800 was introduced in 2000 polaris claimed 140 but on a reputable dyno made 128 out of the box, and was stage tuned on the same dyno with very minor mods to achieve over 150. The new monoblock 800 twin is claimed to make 154 stock, which is a slight exaggeration, the dyno's I have seen all show in the 145ish range bone stock.
I would guess whoever is setting these up in tazcars doesn't know much about polaris clutching and how to relate it to a car

Gee ... reality that doesn't reflect theory ... Big horsepower numbers that don't translate into a drivable, fun, powerful feeling drive ... Who would've thought?

my TAZ car came with the polaris motor. I couldnt wait to get it home & rip the pissaris out .I bought a 08 apex with 800 miles on it .put it in. (not a weekend project) But just the same,VERY worth while.the thing uses 1/2 the gas and has a lot more power. O and no more ringing ears. my only regret is not geting a hold of Jay before I started.I think he could of saved me a lot of time..

a lot of times when an engine is put in a car especially a 2 stroke not enough work is put into a very key part the pipe. 2 strokes are very dependent on pipe design not saying this is the cause but very well could be. Clutching again is also very critical to keep the engine in its sweet spot. It is a lot easier to say yea it works ship it rather then take the hours needed to properly tune the clutch.

ATV worked with Power Pros and modified the pipes that one of the other mfg's made for the sled engines to fit into the car. They were done correctly. Putting two of them in the engine bay wasn't too terribly hard. Getting the triple setup (Arctic Cat 1000) pipes in place took more work, but they were done correctly.

The 800 twins that were put in the first few Tazcars were just not happy there.... (and man was I glad when mine went poof-kaboom!)

Neil and crew spent many hours clutching and testing. He's well aware of the issues that can arise because of bad clutching. Heck, he's still doing clutch work on the new cars. I just received a custom set of weight arms for the Eco setup.

First post here,i stumbled onto this thread while doing a google search for "apex tazcar".One thing i have found after much ,much frustration with my 800 polaris powered tazcar is that when coolant temps reach 140deg the engine goes into timing retard making the motor super lazy and underpowered.there is a sweet spot when the engine gets warm before it hits 140degrees where it pulls really strong.I assume in a snowmobile,in the winter, the engine was able to stay under 140.Running in the sand in 100 degree heat in the summer ,its just not possible.Ive bypassed the timing retard sensor on my 800 and it runs super strong now( at 170 degrees coolant temp, summer heat,no issues).i wonder if the timing retard issue is what gave the 800 twin such a bad rep in the tazcars?
That being said, since i cant seem to sell my TAZ i am looking for an apex engine to install now for a little more power, and to keep the noise down.Im thinking I will end up buying a whole sled so i have everything i need.Im glad to hear some other have already done this as Im sure i will need a little help to get it up and running when the time comes.i plan to install a 600 REV motor in one of my long travel pilots this winter as well so it looks like I will have my hands full !

Welcome to the site.

I know that car. It was either Jerry Seever or Tom Rowe's Taz. It was one of the first six built.

The 800 twin SUCKED in the Tazcars. Sorry, but it's just the way it was. Mine lasted about 4 months and finally met a piston melting, case cracking demise in the desert of Northern Mexico. (made me very happy too). My limp mode didn't kick in until it hit 215F. Weird about yours kicking in 70 degrees cooler. Stupid engine...

I replaced it with an Arctic Cat 1000 triple - great engine for the time. I replaced it with a fuel injected (from the R1) RX1 engine. I had a few teething problems which ended up being the ECU. The present owner is enjoying it much.

Here's a step by step of how to put an Apex into the car too.
