Default The things I have learned.

I put this in the litter box because it really contributes nothing of substance to the board.

So, last weekend, buddy of mine gets 110 fuel for his car that is tuned for 100. After his first refuel with the 110 he starts to complain about a lack of response and top end. As I am currently working on upgrading my pea brain to a walnut and may have hit filbert at this point, I, quick like that, flash back to a recent conversation on MBN regarding octane. I explain in great detail to him my limited knowledge of the subject based on this board. You guessed it - I did not have to inhale to provide the complete depth of my knowledge.

As a direct result of the exchange of information on this board, and the folks who so freely share their knowledge, I am able to salvage his weekend. We drained the 110, cut it with 91 and got him close to 100. His car perked right up again. He had a good weekend as a result of YOU!

Anyway, just a thank you to all for their contributions and making this a nice little place to spend some time.

Haha it cracks me up when people put 91 octane in cars that call for 87. Your not helping your car at all, just wasting money. I've had the octane discussion with alot of my friends trying to educate them.

Without being there I cannot say for sure of course but I would bet he only THINKS it runs better on premium.

You must change your oil more and probably take better care of yours. Then again maybe he just drives short trips and his engine doesn't get all the condensation out of his oil.Either way octane of the gas has nothing to do with how dirty the inside of an engine gets. Now days the cars computer can detect engine knock/detenation and retard the timeing which means less power and less gas mileage, so it's best to not let that happen.I believe, every now and then add some higher octane gas to the tank therefor raising the octane of the mixture and possible keeping engine knock/timeing retard, insuring a good running engine...

yeah, guys at my work put 92 in their STOCK Harleys, and they seem to think the higher the octane the faster it burns....WRONG. oooh well, its their money I guess.

2 of my friends are like that.. they strongly believe that higher octane means a better quality gas.. they get upset at me when i dont run it in my bike.. i just tell them, my bike was made for 87...

My X used to treat the car to premium form time to time. Owners manua ls says 87.

Thing to do is to wring it out from time to time to blow out carbon. Inanimate objects don't respond to treats.

Octane.. Bigger the number,,the slower the burn time.

Classic motocross racer mentality: "Put 110 octane race gas in it - it's a racing machine."

Then they wonder why it's lost top end over rev, low end grunt and seems to be a biatch to jet.

250F riders are probably the worst about this...

How about because the engine was designed to use 90-94 octane fuel?

Race fuel does NOT improve performance. Race fuel compliments engine performance mods that change the compression by raising it over stock. Race fuel allows the mods to work.

It's not a magic bullet that instantly adds performance, regardless of what they think.

I guess it's the same mentality as the dreaded Ford Discustang owner that puts a 5" tach on the dash and cuts off the mufflers. Louder HAS to make it better, just like race fuel HAS to make it faster.
