My 2002 3500 diesel started to give me trouble yesterday, first trouble was when i stopped for coffee and the idle was to high and erratic, normal 850 and was 1100--1800. When restarted was OK for a couple of miles then engine just lost power and the gas pedal had no effect. Pushed in the clutch to coast over the hill and the engine returned to normal idle 850 or so but took 10 or 20 seconds for the gas pedal to start working again normally.
I stopped and bought 2 new fuel filters and put one in. i was expecting to find water but didn't, filter was dirty( slightly past time to change) but no water. I continued on to the funeral and engine still crazy idle. Then on the drive home engine lost power 8-10 times each time i pushed in the clutch to coast to the side of road and the engine idled fine but gas pedal did nothing for 10-20 seconds. I made it home OK. This morning i changed the fuel filter again, found a clean filter and no water so that's not it( after the second filter change with no water i knew water wasn't the trouble) Then i drove it 25 mile trip to pick up a FREE 54in TV (couldn't wait, someone else would have got it first) even with my fingers crossed it didn't keep working, only this time gas pedal quit working again and engine went to idle and never did start working again, had to call a wrecker for return home, wife says, serves me right for chancing it but for a FREE 54 in TV ( cost of wrecker) I didn't buy a factory manual like i usually *do( because nothing ever goes wrong with a diesel, right) I am thinking that it a sensor, maybe throttle position sensor, because it doesn't die and starts easily but i need to scan the computer codes and find out what the problem is,and if its something i can do i have always worked on/ repaired my own and usually my brothers and brotherinlaws cars and trucks, i can take to another mechanic just need to know what needs fixing first so ONLY have to pay for what really needs fixing (i worked as a ford dealer mechanic once and things still seem to run the same way) HELP ,somebody HELP..... |

This is a guess, but there were a couple guys with a semi that had similar problems. It was the potentiometer on the gas pedal. Most newer vehicles don't use a cable, instead the gas pedal is all electronic, and it is activated by a servo. I'd look first at the gas pedal assembly, then at the servo, usually on the injection pump, or the other fuel metering device. Is the check engine light or anything else flashing?

I have no clue on the ohm reading. I've only dinked with one from a GM. I know there are multiple wires on them, so I wouldn't know how to check it either. If you do test the ohms, they should change proportionately, and not be jumping up and down everywhere. When you say that it takes a while for the pedal to become active again, it seems more like the servo, or maybe the ecm. People on a dodge forum suggest that when having engine problems, disconnect the battery for a minute, then try it again. If it fixes the problem for a couple days, it could be the ecm. Before disconnecting, make sure you know the codes for your stereo, if it needs one, or make sure nothing can get hurt.
