DOM starts out as ERW. It is not rolled, it is drawn.

Webco Tubing OEM Engineered Services ERW Process

Webco Tubing OEM Engineered Services DOM Process

DOM is stronger from the cold working, and is more uniform in size and thickness.

Why the need for .083? If the next thicker wall is available why not use that?

That's some good info there. Thanks

dom starts the same process as erw, erw is generally 1010, and dom is generally 1020, so it indeed is not the same material...

hey thanks for the links that helps, but does this mean that there is only cold drawn and no hot drawn ??? i ordered 200' (10 20' tubes) of 1.25" X .095" DOM tube, the lady in the office didn't know what i meant when i asked hot or cold DOM ??? but it was a good price at 2.38/ft. !! i was getting the .083" but the whole 20' tube only weighed 3 lbs. less, so i opted for the ease to weld and strength factors.

dom is cold always, hot rolled steel is far weaker in general than cold rolled...2.38 is a good price for dom, make sure it is dom when you get it, a lot of people will try to pull one on un knowledgeable customers, had it happen to me, guy tried to tell me erw was dom...

I had a similar situation. Well kinda. The stupid yard worker at my steel supplier tried to give me 4130 when I wanted some 1010 for prototyping. In his defense he did have the diameter & wall thicknes right lol
